G20 Summit 2020 updates

On March 26, 2020, the leaders of the Group of 20 nations came together for an ‘extraordinary virtual G20 Summit’ chaired by the King of Saudi Arabia Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, to discuss the impact of coronavirus pandemic on the global economy.

At the summit, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi spoke about the need to place health and human welfare at the top of our global priorities; sharing benefits of medical research development and promote new crisis management protocols and procedures for an interconnected global village among others.

A report from the Indian foreign ministry stated that the leaders of the world’s largest economics collectively committed to injecting more than US$5 trillion into the global economy to counter the social and financial impacts of the pandemic.

At the meeting, the leaders agreed to take all necessary measures to contain the pandemic and to protect people. They also supported the strengthening of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) mandate in the fight against pandemics, including the delivery of medical supplies, diagnostic tools, treatments, medicines, and vaccines.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO  welcomed the G20’s initiative to find joint solutions and work together. “This is a global crisis that requires a global response.”
