San Francisco is highlighting its appeal and showcasing its diversity with a new initiative.

“I Am San Francisco” expands on the “You Are Always Welcome” campaign, designed to inform visitors that all people are encouraged to come to the California city. “Our first phase addressed the visitor directly to assure them that, no matter where they come from or how they live, they are always welcome here,” said San Francisco Travel Association president and CEO Joe D’Alessandro.
The newest series highlights San Francisco locals.

“We wanted to distance ourselves from the rhetoric coming out of the capital,” added D’Alessandro. “Phase two is from the local’s perspective, presenting why San Francisco is the place for them and, by extension, for everyone.”
The online series features the stories of both natives of the city and those who came to visit San Francisco but then made the city their home.

The profiles cover race, gender, age, economics and orientation and include stories from a cable car gripman, a Summer of Love historian, a Muslim tech worker, female entrepreneurs/pop-up chefs, executives, artists, a transgender person and more.

The “I Am San Francisco” series is a companion to the original video that launched in early 2017. The video is available in English and Spanish and was promoted in the U.S., Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom.
