New international link supports Malaysia’s regional aviation ambitions and boosts tourism access through revitalised Subang Airport

In a strategic move to bolster regional air connectivity and stimulate tourism growth, Batik Air has launched its inaugural direct flight OD 533 from Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), Bangkok to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB), Subang. The milestone flight, welcomed with a celebratory reception today, marks the airline’s first international service from Subang Airport and underscores its growing role as a city-centric aviation hub.

The new daily service, operated using a Boeing 737, not only enhances accessibility between Malaysia and Thailand but also aligns with national tourism objectives in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026)—the country’s flagship campaign to attract international arrivals and revitalise the tourism sector.

A Boost for Business and Leisure Travel

Positioned just 25 kilometres from downtown Kuala Lumpur, Subang Airport offers travellers a convenient, time-saving alternative to the busier Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The newly inaugurated Subang–Bangkok route opens direct access for both leisure travellers exploring Bangkok’s vibrant urban energy and business passengers seeking quick intra-ASEAN connectivity.

“This launch is more than just a new route—it’s a signal of intent,” said Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism Malaysia. “Thailand is one of our top source markets. Strengthening accessibility from major Thai cities to Malaysian gateways like Subang is critical to achieving our VM2026 targets. We commend Batik Air’s proactive expansion efforts in both international and domestic spheres.”

Strengthening Subang’s Position as a Regional Hub

The introduction of this international route is a key component of Batik Air’s broader strategy to elevate Subang Airport as a competitive regional aviation node. The airline also launched a new domestic service from Subang to Kuching on the same day, building on its expanding network that includes connections to Penang, Kota Bharu, Kota Kinabalu, and Tawau (via BKI).

“We’re bringing travellers closer to the destinations they love—whether it’s the cultural vibrancy of Kuching or the electrifying buzz of Bangkok,” said Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, Chief Executive Officer of Batik Air. “With these routes, we’re reinforcing Subang’s viability as a high-frequency, city airport that serves both local and regional demand.”

Robust Malaysia–Thailand Air Links

Batik Air’s regional footprint continues to grow. The airline currently operates 57 weekly flights between Malaysia and Thailand, connecting Kuala Lumpur (KLIA Terminal 1) and Johor Bahru with Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Hat Yai. The airline now offers a total of 9,234 weekly seats on these cross-border routes, affirming its position as a key player in the Malaysia–Thailand aviation corridor.

The expansion also comes at a time when Southeast Asia’s travel and tourism sectors are regaining momentum post-pandemic, with governments across the region actively collaborating to restore air access, increase traveller confidence, and unlock economic growth tied to tourism.

Looking Ahead to Visit Malaysia 2026

As Malaysia gears up for Visit Malaysia 2026, initiatives like Batik Air’s Subang–Bangkok route play a vital role in laying the groundwork for the anticipated tourism rebound. The campaign aims to draw millions of international tourists by showcasing Malaysia’s diverse attractions, rich cultural heritage, and improved travel infrastructure. With new routes, strategic airport utilisation, and inter-agency collaboration, Malaysia is positioning itself as a top-tier destination in Southeast Asia, ready to welcome travellers with convenience, connectivity, and authentic experiences.
