MIAMI, April 14, 2025 — Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) made waves in Miami this week with the official christening of its newest vessel, Norwegian Aqua, and a bold announcement: the brand’s beloved private island, Great Stirrup Cay, is set for a major transformation.
Headlining the event at PortMiami was Emmy®️ Award-winning actor Eric Stonestreet, who took on his new role as godfather of Norwegian Aqua with signature charm and humor. The ceremony, held at NCL’s LEED®️ Gold-certified terminal, was a vibrant celebration of tradition and innovation—complete with a theatrical tribute to Prince, sneak peeks at what’s to come, and a crowd of over 2,000 guests.
Great Stirrup Cay Gets Even Greater
As part of the festivities, NCL President David J. Herrera revealed exciting new plans to enhance Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s exclusive island in the Bahamas. Slated for completion in late 2025, the upgraded destination will introduce a sprawling pool area with a swim-up bar, a dedicated splash zone for children, and a suite of family-friendly experiences designed to offer more—more fun, more relaxation, and more unforgettable moments.
Guests will also enjoy easier navigation around the island thanks to a new welcome center and tram service. Popular onboard experiences will soon extend to land, including the adults-only Vibe Beach Club with private cabanas and upgraded amenities, and Horizon Park, a recreational lawn-games area perfect for all ages. NCL also teased the arrival of a new hammock haven and Tiki-inspired experiences, promising a true slice of paradise.

“Experience More at Sea” with Norwegian Aqua
The christening event paid homage to maritime tradition, with blessings delivered by Pastor Pete Pera and remarks from Norwegian Aqua’s Captain Robert Lundberg. Eric Stonestreet then took the stage, beaming with pride and enthusiasm for his new title.
“As a new cruiser with a deep passion for travel, it’s incredible to see everything Norwegian Aqua has to offer,” said Stonestreet. “From the Aqua Slidecoaster to the amazing crew, it’s an honor to serve as godfather of this remarkable ship.”
The ceremony concluded with the ceremonial bottle breaking across the ship’s hull, wishing good fortune and safe travels to all who sail aboard.
Following her christening voyage, Norwegian Aqua will begin a season of seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida, calling on Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, Tortola, and of course, Great Stirrup Cay. In late summer, the ship heads north for Bermuda sailings from New York City before returning to Miami for winter itineraries through April 2026.
More Value, More Memories
To sweeten the experience, NCL’s new More At Sea™️ program offers travelers an all-inclusive edge—unlimited open bar, specialty dining, high-speed Wi-Fi, and shore excursion credits. With savings of over 75%, it’s the cruise industry’s latest game-changer, featuring premium brands like Grey Goose, Casamigos, and Woodford Reserve, plus perks like free second guest airfare and kids sail free on select sailings.
As Herrera put it: “This is a special moment. With Norwegian Aqua setting sail and Great Stirrup Cay entering a new era, we’re delivering more of what our guests love most about cruising with NCL—more experiences, more memories, more at sea.
