Trusted Traveller Initiative Vital for Airport Efficiency and International Travel

The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reopened the Global Entry programme on March 11, following a temporary suspension caused by a partial government shutdown. The move has been widely welcomed by the US travel industry, which highlights the programme’s importance in enhancing airport security, streamlining passenger processing, and supporting the recovery of international travel.

The United States Travel Association (USTA), the nation’s largest trade association representing the travel and tourism sector, issued a statement emphasizing that the reopening restores a critical component of the Trusted Traveller Programmes. These initiatives, which also include TSA PreCheck, are designed to balance border security with efficiency for frequent domestic and international travellers.

“We welcome today’s decision by the White House and leaders at US Customs and Border Protection to reopen Global Entry and reaffirm the value of Trusted Traveller Programs,” said Geoff Freeman, President and CEO of USTA.

Freeman noted that over the past weeks, the travel sector has consistently underscored the role of programmes like Global Entry in maintaining both security and operational efficiency. Outreach efforts to Congress, federal agencies, and public stakeholders have reinforced that these programmes not only expedite airport processing but also support the smooth flow of travellers during periods of high demand.

“Trusted Traveller Programmes enhance security while keeping travel moving,” Freeman said. “This step is critical, especially as international travel rebounds, but policymakers must also ensure that Transportation Security Officers — the frontline personnel who keep our aviation system operational — are adequately supported and compensated.”

The temporary suspension of Global Entry, coupled with ongoing federal funding disruptions, had created bottlenecks at airports, delaying both arrivals and departures. The travel industry emphasizes that reliable, well-supported Trusted Traveller initiatives are essential for reducing congestion at security checkpoints and immigration counters, particularly as global travel demand continues to grow.

USTA also highlighted the broader need for legislative support for aviation security personnel, many of whom continued working during the shutdown without pay. Freeman stressed that consistent backing for these essential employees is crucial to sustaining a safe and efficient travel environment.

“The travel industry remains committed to working with policymakers to strengthen these programmes and ensure that aviation staff receive the support they need,” Freeman added.

With Global Entry now operational, frequent travellers from around the world can once again enjoy expedited airport processing, contributing to a smoother, more predictable travel experience. The reopening is seen as a positive signal for the ongoing recovery of international tourism to and from the United States.
