WestJet is set to enhance its flight offerings in 2025, announcing new seasonal non-stop services between Calgary and New York LaGuardia, as well as a long-awaited route to Mexico City. Starting May 14, 2025, the airline will operate five weekly flights between Calgary and Mexico City, strengthening its role as Canada’s leading leisure carrier and reaffirming Calgary’s status as a key hub in WestJet’s global network.
With the introduction of this new route, WestJet continues to invest in popular sun destinations and solidify its leadership in connecting Canada to Mexico. The airline will now offer even greater access to Mexico’s vibrant culture, tourism, and trade opportunities for travelers from Western Canada.
“We’re excited to offer new travel options for Calgarians and Western Canadians,” said Daniel Fajardo, Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning at WestJet. “This new service opens doors for Canadians to explore Mexico and for businesses in Calgary to tap into one of the largest consumer markets in North America.”
The Calgary-Mexico City route had been previously served in 2018, and its reintroduction is expected to benefit both tourism and trade, with a particular emphasis on Alberta’s key industries and exporters. The added flights will also enhance cargo capacity, a crucial benefit for businesses in Western Canada.
WestJet will serve 13 cities in Mexico from 24 Canadian cities in 2025, continuing its dominance with more than 200 flights per week during peak travel periods. Last year, the WestJet Group, which includes Sunwing Airlines, operated 46 daily flights between Canada and Mexico, carrying over 2.6 million passengers. Through a longstanding partnership with Aeromexico, travelers can seamlessly connect to multiple Mexican destinations, with a convenient single check-in experience.
In addition to the new Mexico City route, WestJet is expanding service to New York LaGuardia starting May 24, 2025, offering weekly flights between Calgary and the Big Apple. This seasonal service will complement existing flights between Calgary and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, allowing passengers more options to visit New York’s iconic landmarks, catch a Broadway show, or attend major events.
“As a leisure carrier, we understand the strong demand for flights to New York, and the addition of LaGuardia will provide guests with more flexibility and choice,” said Fajardo. Flights to New York LaGuardia will run weekly until August 30, 2025.
The airline’s expansion will increase Calgary’s presence as a global hub, benefiting tourism, business, and economic growth in the region. Local officials have expressed support for WestJet’s efforts, highlighting the positive impact of enhanced connectivity on Calgary’s economy.
“WestJet’s investment in direct flights from Calgary to Mexico City and New York strengthens Calgary’s role as a key international hub, boosting tourism and business opportunities,” said Joseph Schow, Alberta’s Minister of Tourism and Sport.
With these new routes, WestJet is reinforcing its position as Canada’s premier carrier for leisure travel, offering more non-stop options to popular destinations and supporting both economic and cultural exchanges between Canada and key international markets.
