In a move that underscores the growing importance of Central Asia in global travel networks, Air India has announced a new codeshare partnership with Uzbekistan Airways, enhancing connectivity between India and Uzbekistan while expanding travel options for passengers across both regions.

Strengthening India–Central Asia Air Links

Effective March 20, 2026, Air India has begun placing its ‘AI’ designator code on select Uzbekistan Airways-operated flights, covering key routes between India and Uzbekistan. These include connections from New Delhi, Mumbai, and seasonal services from Goa to Tashkent—a city that is steadily gaining prominence as a hub for leisure, business, and cultural travel.

The agreement allows passengers to book seamless itineraries on a single ticket, with the added convenience of through-checked baggage to their final destination. This streamlined travel experience is expected to benefit both Indian outbound travellers and international visitors transiting through India.

Expanding Access Beyond Tashkent

In addition to the codeshare arrangement, the two airlines continue to maintain an interline partnership, enabling further connectivity beyond Tashkent. Travellers can access a wider network of destinations across Uzbekistan, including Samarkand, Bukhara, Fergana, Namangan, Urgench, Termez, Qarshi, and Nukus—destinations known for their historical significance along the Silk Road and growing appeal among cultural travellers.

Meeting Rising Demand for Cultural and Regional Travel

According to Nipun Aggarwal, the partnership aligns with Air India’s broader strategy to expand its global footprint while responding to increasing demand for travel to emerging destinations. Tashkent, in particular, is witnessing rising interest from Indian travellers seeking a mix of heritage, architecture, and modern urban experiences.

From Uzbekistan Airways’ perspective, the collaboration represents a key step in strengthening aviation ties with India. Shukhrat Khudaykulov described the agreement as a foundation for deeper cooperation, opening avenues for future joint initiatives and expanded route networks.

Seamless Travel Experience

With bookings now available across all major channels—including Air India’s official website, mobile platforms, and travel agencies—the partnership simplifies journey planning for passengers traveling between the two regions. The integration of services ensures smoother transfers and greater flexibility, particularly for multi-city itineraries.

A Strategic Step in Network Expansion

The codeshare agreement reflects a broader trend among global carriers to enhance connectivity through partnerships rather than solely relying on fleet expansion. For Air India, it represents another step in rebuilding and strengthening its international network, while positioning itself as a key connector between South Asia and emerging travel markets in Central Asia.

As interest in Silk Road destinations continues to grow, this partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between India and Uzbekistan.
