International arrivals rise 7% year-on-year, reinforcing Egypt’s position among the world’s fastest-growing tourism destinations

Egypt’s tourism industry has maintained its strong growth trajectory in 2026, welcoming 6.1 million international visitors between January and April, a 7% increase compared with the same period last year. The latest figures build on a record-breaking 2025 and highlight the country’s growing appeal across global source markets as it advances its ambitious target of attracting 30 million tourists annually by 2030.

Egypt’s tourism sector has continued its impressive post-pandemic expansion, recording a strong increase in international visitor arrivals during the opening months of 2026 despite a challenging global travel environment marked by geopolitical uncertainty and rising travel costs.

According to figures released by Egyptian authorities, the country welcomed 6.1 million international tourists between January and April 2026, compared with 5.7 million visitors during the same period in 2025, representing year-on-year growth of 7%. The performance reinforces Egypt’s status as one of the most resilient and fastest-growing tourism destinations in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The latest results follow an exceptional performance in 2025, when Egypt recorded a 20.5% increase in tourist arrivals, extending a multi-year growth trend that has been supported by infrastructure investments, enhanced air connectivity, diversified tourism offerings, and aggressive international marketing campaigns.

Growth Continues Across Key Source Markets

Egypt currently attracts visitors from 179 countries, reflecting the broad international appeal of its tourism portfolio. Authorities have increasingly adopted market-specific promotional strategies designed to address the preferences of individual source markets while strengthening the country’s visibility across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.

The sustained growth demonstrates that demand for Egypt’s diverse tourism experiences remains strong. From the ancient wonders of Cairo and Giza to the luxury beach resorts of the Red Sea, Nile cruise experiences, cultural heritage attractions, and emerging leisure destinations, the country continues to attract a broad spectrum of international travellers.

Industry analysts note that Egypt’s tourism success is increasingly being driven by a combination of affordability, improved visitor infrastructure, enhanced airline connectivity, and the country’s ability to offer year-round tourism experiences across multiple market segments.

Grand Egyptian Museum Boosting Global Interest

One of the most significant catalysts supporting Egypt’s tourism growth is the continued international interest generated by the landmark Grand Egyptian Museum, which officially opened in late 2025.

The museum, showcasing more than 7,000 years of Egyptian civilisation, has rapidly become one of the country’s premier attractions and a major draw for international visitors. Industry observers believe the museum is helping reposition Egypt as a global cultural tourism powerhouse while encouraging longer visitor stays and higher tourism spending.

International travel media and tour operators have also highlighted Egypt’s growing attractiveness as a value-for-money destination, particularly at a time when many competing tourism markets are experiencing rising accommodation and travel costs.

Tourism Central to Egypt’s Economic Strategy

Tourism remains one of Egypt’s most important economic sectors, generating foreign exchange earnings, supporting employment, and stimulating investment across aviation, hospitality, transportation, retail, and infrastructure.

The government has outlined an ambitious vision to attract 30 million international visitors annually by 2030, a target that would position Egypt among the world’s leading tourism destinations. To support this objective, authorities continue to invest in airport expansion, hospitality infrastructure, destination marketing, digital tourism services, and aviation connectivity.

The growth achieved during the first four months of 2026 suggests the country remains on a positive trajectory despite broader regional and global challenges affecting travel demand.

Positive Outlook for 2026

Industry stakeholders remain optimistic about Egypt’s tourism outlook for the remainder of the year. Strong booking trends from Europe, growing demand from emerging markets, and continued investment in tourism infrastructure are expected to support further expansion throughout 2026.

The country’s diversified tourism offering—spanning cultural heritage, beach tourism, luxury travel, adventure tourism, diving, wellness experiences, and business events—continues to strengthen its competitive position in the global marketplace.

As international tourism recovers and travellers increasingly seek authentic cultural experiences combined with value and accessibility, Egypt appears well positioned to sustain its growth momentum and move closer to its long-term tourism ambitions.
