London Heathrow Joins Elite List of the World’s Best Airports for Families, While Helsinki Tops Global Rankings

As family travel continues to rebound globally, airports are increasingly investing in child-friendly facilities, inclusive services, and stress-reducing experiences for passengers travelling with young children. A new international study has identified the world’s best airports for families, with London Heathrow emerging as the only airport in England to secure a place among the global top performers, reflecting a growing industry focus on passenger wellbeing and family-centric travel experiences.

Airports Redefining the Family Travel Experience

For many travellers, the holiday experience begins long before boarding a flight. Increasingly, airports are becoming destinations in their own right, offering services and facilities designed to reduce travel stress and enhance passenger comfort—particularly for families travelling with children.

A new global study conducted by AttractionTickets.com, one of Europe’s leading theme park specialists, has ranked the world’s most family-friendly airports, highlighting those that excel in creating seamless and enjoyable pre-flight experiences for parents and children alike.

The research evaluated more than 140 airports worldwide, assessing a broad range of family-oriented features including children’s play areas, baby-changing facilities, stroller and pram hire services, dedicated family security lanes, neurodivergent support programmes, sleep and relaxation zones, airport Wi-Fi quality, and overall passenger satisfaction.

Among the airports recognised, London Heathrow stood out as the only English airport to secure a position in the global top ten, underlining its commitment to improving the travel experience for families.

Heathrow Earns Global Recognition

London Heathrow achieved an impressive score of 17.5 out of 20, receiving particular recognition for its extensive baby-care facilities and dedicated children’s play zones.

These amenities are especially valuable for families embarking on long-haul journeys, where keeping children engaged and comfortable before departure can significantly improve the overall travel experience.

The airport’s inclusion among the world’s leading family-friendly aviation hubs reflects broader investments across the industry aimed at enhancing passenger wellbeing and delivering more inclusive travel environments.

Industry observers note that family travellers are increasingly influencing airport infrastructure decisions, prompting operators to introduce facilities that address the practical and emotional needs of parents, caregivers, and young passengers.

Nordic Excellence Leads Global Rankings

Topping the global rankings was Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which achieved an outstanding score of 19.4 out of 20.

The Finnish airport was praised for its comprehensive family-focused approach, including nature-inspired play zones based on Finland’s wildlife and landscapes, as well as calm communal spaces designed to help passengers relax before boarding.

Its emphasis on creating a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere has positioned it as a benchmark for family-friendly airport design.

Closely following were several internationally renowned aviation hubs including Singapore Changi Airport, widely recognised for its world-class passenger amenities, and Bahrain International Airport, which has continued to strengthen its passenger experience offering through modern facilities and family services.

India also achieved a strong showing in the rankings, with both Kempegowda International Airport and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport sharing fourth position, reflecting the country’s growing emphasis on passenger-centric airport development.

Passenger Wellbeing Becomes a Strategic Priority

The findings highlight a significant shift in airport management strategies globally, with passenger wellbeing emerging as a key differentiator in an increasingly competitive aviation landscape.

Airports are no longer judged solely on operational efficiency and connectivity; travellers now expect environments that support comfort, accessibility, and emotional wellbeing.

Facilities such as sensory-friendly spaces for neurodivergent passengers, dedicated family screening lanes, children’s entertainment zones, nursing rooms, and quiet relaxation areas are becoming essential components of modern airport infrastructure.

According to Oliver Brendon, Chief Executive Officer of AttractionTickets.com, the rankings demonstrate how airports are increasingly focused on removing stress from every stage of the passenger journey.

He noted that dedicated family facilities and thoughtfully designed relaxation spaces are helping transform airports into more welcoming environments for travellers of all ages.
