Saudi Arabia’s newest national carrier expands its international footprint with new routes, Boeing 787 operations, and adoption of IATA’s CO₂ emissions transparency programme.

Riyadh Air has reached a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a major global airline by joining the International Air Transport Association (IATA), reinforcing its commitment to global aviation standards, operational excellence, and sustainable growth as it begins commercial operations.

The announcement comes shortly after the Saudi Arabian government-backed carrier launched its inaugural commercial services, commencing daily operations between Riyadh and key destinations including London Heathrow and Jeddah. The airline has also strengthened its fleet with the induction of three Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, forming the foundation of its long-haul international network.

Riyadh Air’s membership in IATA was formally announced during the 82nd IATA World Air Transport Summit in Rio de Janeiro, placing the airline among a global network of more than 360 member carriers representing the vast majority of international air traffic. Membership provides access to globally recognised industry standards, operational frameworks, safety initiatives, training programmes, and collaborative platforms that support continuous improvement across the aviation sector.

As part of its commitment to greater environmental responsibility and transparency, Riyadh Air has also adopted IATA’s CO₂ Connect programme, a data-driven platform that provides accurate flight emissions information based on actual fuel burn and airline-specific operational data. The initiative enables passengers and corporate travel buyers to access more reliable carbon emissions information, supporting more informed and sustainable travel decisions.

The airline’s growth strategy includes a rapid expansion of its international network, with new services planned to major global destinations including Cairo, Dubai, Madrid, and Manchester. Riyadh Air aims to connect Saudi Arabia with more than 100 international destinations by 2030, supported by continued fleet expansion and the Kingdom’s broader vision to establish itself as a leading global aviation hub.

Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer of Riyadh Air, described the IATA membership as a landmark achievement for the airline and a reflection of the efforts undertaken to meet the highest international aviation standards.

“Becoming an IATA member is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of our teams to meet and surpass the highest industry standards. It gives Riyadh Air a place among global airline peers that have contributed to the development of the aviation industry since IATA’s establishment in 1945,” Douglas said.

Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, welcomed the airline to the association and highlighted the importance of Riyadh Air’s contribution to the future of global aviation.

“We are pleased to welcome Riyadh Air to IATA’s airline membership and congratulate the airline on this important milestone. We look forward to its active participation in shaping industry priorities and supporting the continued growth of Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector and global connectivity,” Walsh said.

Riyadh Air’s entry into IATA comes at a pivotal moment for Saudi Arabia’s aviation industry, which is undergoing a major transformation under the Kingdom’s broader economic diversification strategy. With a modern fleet, ambitious network expansion plans, advanced digital capabilities, and a strong focus on sustainability, the airline is positioning itself as a next-generation global carrier connecting the Middle East with the world.

The combination of international route expansion, adherence to global aviation standards, and adoption of advanced emissions reporting tools reflects Riyadh Air’s ambition to build a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible airline for the future of global air travel.
