The six-day, five-night Peru experience will be available on selected Magic of Colombia departures from April 2027, expanding the cruise line’s South American land-and-river travel offering.

AmaWaterways is extending its South American travel programme with the introduction of a six-day Machu Picchu land package, available as a post-cruise addition to selected Magic of Colombia itineraries from April 2027.

The new experience will allow guests sailing along Colombia’s Magdalena River to continue their journey into Peru, combining cultural exploration, guided excursions, premium accommodation and rail travel to one of South America’s most celebrated archaeological sites.

The extension will initially be offered on selected 2027 departures before becoming available after every sailing of the Magic of Colombia itinerary in 2028, according to the company.

From Colombia to Peru

Following the seven-night river cruise between Barranquilla and Cartagena, guests will travel by air from Cartagena to Lima. The programme includes hotel accommodation in the Peruvian capital, where travellers can explore historic landmarks and neighbourhoods before continuing to Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

The itinerary combines Peru’s colonial heritage and Inca history with opportunities to experience local cuisine, landscapes and cultural traditions. The highlight is a privately guided visit to Machu Picchu, the UNESCO World Heritage Site set high in the Andes.

Depending on the package selected, the journey to Machu Picchu will be made aboard the Hiram Bingham, a Belmond train, or first-class Inca Rail. The rail experience adds another dimension to the journey, taking visitors through the Andean landscape towards the ancient citadel.

Two accommodation options

AmaWaterways is offering two versions of the extension: Boutique Machu Picchu and Iconic Machu Picchu. Both combine hotel stays, guided touring, meals and transfers within Peru, while differing in their accommodation and travel arrangements.

The Iconic option includes travel aboard the Hiram Bingham and stays at Belmond properties. The Boutique package provides an alternative for travellers seeking a curated Peru experience with a different combination of hotels and services.

The company’s package details include hotel breakfasts, selected lunch and dinner experiences, expert-led tours and transfers between the destinations. Travellers should check the individual package inclusions and current pricing when booking.

Expanding South American travel experiences

The launch represents AmaWaterways’ first dedicated Peru land journey and broadens the scope of its Colombia river cruises. Rather than ending the holiday in Cartagena, guests will have the option to extend their trip into another South American destination, linking river cruising with archaeological heritage and high-altitude landscapes.

Machu Picchu remains a major draw for international visitors, while Cusco and the Sacred Valley offer further opportunities to explore Inca history, traditional communities and Peru’s distinctive culinary culture.

By linking its Magdalena River itinerary with a guided journey through Peru, AmaWaterways is strengthening its land-and-cruise approach to South America. The extension gives travellers a more comprehensive regional itinerary while allowing them to choose between two accommodation and travel styles.
