Air India has commenced operations of its newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Mumbai–London Heathrowroute, bringing its latest-generation onboard product to one of the airline’s flagship international services.

Effective immediately, flights AI131/AI130 between Mumbai and Heathrow Airport will be operated by Air India’s factory-fresh Boeing 787-9 aircraft, featuring all-new cabin interiors designed exclusively for the airline and installed directly on Boeing’s production line.

The deployment marks a significant milestone in Air India’s ongoing fleet modernisation programme, introducing a new level of comfort, technology and premium travel experience for passengers flying between India and the United Kingdom.

First line-fit Boeing 787s built exclusively for Air India

The newly deployed aircraft are the first Boeing 787 Dreamliners purpose-built for Air India, incorporating bespoke interiors that reflect the airline’s evolving brand identity and customer experience strategy.

Unlike retrofitted aircraft, these line-fit Dreamliners have been delivered directly from Boeing’s manufacturing facility with Air India’s customised cabin design already installed, offering passengers a seamless blend of contemporary aesthetics, advanced technology and Indian-inspired design elements.

The introduction of the aircraft also brings Premium Economy Class to the Mumbai–London Heathrow service for the first time, expanding customer choice across Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

Meanwhile, Air India’s second daily Mumbai–London Heathrow service will continue to operate using its upgraded Boeing 777-300ER fleet, featuring First Class, ensuring passengers on both frequencies benefit from enhanced onboard products.

Three-class configuration designed for long-haul comfort

The new Boeing 787-9 features a three-class configuration comprising:

  • 30 Business Class suites
  • 28 Premium Economy seats
  • 238 Economy Class seats

The redesigned interiors combine modern styling with upgraded seating, improved personal space and the latest in-flight entertainment technology to enhance the long-haul travel experience.

Business Class redefined

Passengers travelling in Business Class will enjoy private suites offering direct aisle access and fully flat beds extending up to 79 inches.

Each suite is equipped with wireless charging, generous personal storage, multiple charging options and a 17-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen powered by the latest-generation entertainment platform, creating a premium environment for work, dining and rest during long-haul flights.

Premium Economy debuts on the route

One of the most significant additions is the introduction of a dedicated Premium Economy cabin.

Configured in a 2-3-2 seating layout, the cabin offers wider seats with a 38-inch pitch, enhanced recline, adjustable headrests, leg and calf rests, along with a 13.3-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen.

The new cabin is designed to bridge the gap between Economy and Business Class, providing travellers with greater comfort and personal space on long-haul journeys.

Enhanced Economy experience

Economy Class has also received a comprehensive upgrade with ergonomically designed seats intended for extended international travel.

Passengers benefit from 11.6-inch 4K QLED HDR entertainment screens, integrated personal device holders and improved seating comfort, creating a more enjoyable travel experience across the airline’s longest international sectors.

Next-generation technology across all cabins

The aircraft introduces Air India’s newest inflight entertainment ecosystem, powered by the Thales AVANT Upplatform.

Across every cabin, passengers can access more than 3,000 hours of entertainment through high-definition touchscreen displays featuring intuitive navigation and Bluetooth audio connectivity, allowing travellers to pair their own wireless headphones.

Additional onboard technology includes:

  • USB-A and USB-C charging ports
  • Universal AC power outlets
  • Wireless charging in Business Class
  • High-definition 4K entertainment screens
  • Bluetooth headphone pairing across all cabins

The aircraft also incorporates new mood lighting inspired by traditional Indian wellness concepts, designed to create a calmer cabin environment and support passenger wellbeing on long-haul flights.

Elevated dining and onboard hospitality

Alongside the new cabin interiors, Air India has refreshed its onboard hospitality offering.

Passengers can expect newly curated menus featuring both Indian and international cuisine, complemented by premium chinaware, upgraded glassware, redesigned tableware, plush bedding and newly designed amenity kits.

These enhancements form part of the airline’s broader effort to deliver a more refined and consistent premium experience across its international network.

Strengthening connectivity between India and the UK

The United Kingdom remains one of Air India’s most strategically important international markets, supported by strong demand from business travellers, leisure tourists and the extensive Indian diaspora.

The airline currently operates 57 weekly non-stop flights between India and the UK, connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Amritsar with London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Birmingham.

Through its hubs in India, Air India also offers onward connectivity to destinations across the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia, reinforcing its ambition to position India as a major global aviation hub.

The introduction of the airline’s newest Boeing 787-9 on the Mumbai–London Heathrow route represents another significant step in Air India’s transformation programme, combining modern aircraft, enhanced onboard products and expanded premium travel options to strengthen its competitiveness on one of its most important long-haul international markets.
