Take your next sundowner experience to new heights at the city’s best rooftop bars

ABar&ABar Rooftop

Two differently themed venues-a Victorian-inspired cocktail den and an alfresco rooftop space-set A Bar apart from the other hotel bars in the city
Launched alongside the highly anticipated Akira Back restaurant, ABar impressively combines style with substance by pulling off well-rounded libations in two distinct venues: a Victorian-themed drinking palace and a rooftop drinking space up above.
Upon entering the bar, your eyes are met with awe-inspiring, moodily lit interiors that make the most of dark wood, black marble and brass details to pay tribute to Victorian London aesthetics and gritty retro-Manhattan elements. The outdoor terrace, fitted with apothecary-like cabinets, provide an area for puffing on vintage cigars while looking out to Sukhumvit’s glittering skyscrapers.
The bar is helmed by RojanatChareonsri, who honed his skills at Nopa Kitchen + Bar in Washington DC and Fillets in Bangkok. The cocktails put the focus on premium dark spirits, so expect whiskey, rum and cognac to make their way into your drink (though we also noticed a couple of gin-based items). Study in Stone is a sour with Nusa Cana rum, sherry cream, citrus oleo saccharum (macerated lemon oil) and lemon. Another offering, The Oxford, smartly reinvents the classic cocktail, Harvard, with the use of Martell VSOP cognac, cardamom syrup and aromatic bitters.
While the main bar teems with elegant masculine touches, the rooftop venue one floor above is a more casual space set off by garden plants and cushioned seats. Managed separately from its big brother downstairs, this alfresco bar specializes in gin—there are approximately 55 different variants, making this one of the city’s most impressive gin collections. Here, mixologist SaimaiNantarat conjures up signature items like the fragrant Be Gin (Beefeater 24, Luxardo Maraschino liqueur, lavender syrup, lemon and egg white), and a gin-based version of the Old Fashioned that mixes aged gin with coffee and vanilla syrup.
The drinks at ABar may be more innovative than experimental, but they are outstanding in terms of flavor. Chalk this up as one of our new favorite cocktail joints in the city.

Penthouse Rooftop

Penthouse Bar + Grill at Park Hyatt unveils a rooftop addition to complete the swanky, three-story food and drink complex.
Park Hyatt Bangkok has finally introduced the latest and topmost annex to Penthouse Bar + Grill, the lavish dining and drinking destination that occupies the luxury hotel’s top three floors. Climb up the stairs from the triplex’s second level for the full-on, al fresco rooftop experience.
While the main bar downstairs features a masculine, rather imposing, vibe, the brand-new rooftop space offers a more relaxed setting. Unlike typical watering holes where bartenders sling drinks before your eyes, this rooftop venue boasts smaller bars that afford barmen a bit more privacy. And you get one the best views the city can offer with a lookout to Bangkok’s central business district.
Cocktails at Penthouse Rooftop don’t skimp on the booze nor do they come with sky-high prices. Signature numbers include Penthouse’s take on Paloma, here given an Oriental twist with pomelo and oolong tea syrup combined with Patron Silver tequila. Chalong Mule, a twist on Moscow Mule, has all the elements we love about the sweet and sour classic, but gets an extra tropical flavor from basil leaves. Le Pierriot is a flavorful drink that mixes Cointreau, red wine reduction, Pernod absinthe, lemon and tonic. If you prefer spirits-forward options, you can ask for classic cocktails or heavier items from the main cocktail bar. And if you’re off the alcohol, the bar also serves an impressive teetotal refresher inspired by the traditional miangkham snack.

Alfresco 64 – A Chivas Bar

Chivas Regal, a global purveyor of Scotch whisky, partners up with LebuaThe Tower Club to launch the world’s highest whisky bar.

Sitting on the 64th floor of Lebua, the swanky Alfresco 64 makes up the latest addition to The Dome, which also houses a number of fine-dining restaurants and high-end bars. The whisky bar’s overall design is evocative of a luxurious yacht with the outdoor seating area reminiscent of the ship’s bow. Instead of views of the ocean, however, you get unparalleled views of the Bangkok cityline. A part of the indoor space is dedicated to a plush gentleman’s club-inspired heritage room which stores rare whisky bottles and hosts special events for VIP guests.

You definitely come here for the Chivas Exclusive Lebua blend, ChivasRegal’s special bottle created specially for Lebua, and the Chivas Regal Ultis, which contains five special single malts from five different distilleries in the Scottish town of Speyside. On top of the on-the-rock tipples, you get to enjoy exclusive Chivas blends in concoctions like Cloud on 64 (Chivas Regal 18 Years Gold Signature, pomegranate, maraschino liqueur, honey and lime, B690) and Ultimate Ultis (B1,250) which mixes Chivas Regal Ultis with refreshing combination of mint, spiced honey, pineapple juice, ginger and cassis, served in a golden goblet.

Flûte A Perrier-Jouët Bar

Here comes the world’s highest outdoor Champagne bar

Sky Bar and Sirocco, two notable establishments at The Dome at Lebua, have topped the lists of Asia’s – if not the world’s – best rooftop dining and drinking venues over the recent years. Last year, Lebua decided to team up with Pernord Ricard in a project meant to elevate the sky-high drinking experience even more. After talks and discussions, the project was revealed as Flûte A Perrier-Jouët Bar, the world’s highest bar of its kind.

Set on the 64th floor of the State Tower Buiding, the sophisticated bar is located right at the entrance to Sky Bar and Sirocco. From the lit-up bar adorned with elegant butterfly patterns, lush green cushions, and exclusive Champagne glasses decorated with golden butterflies, it’s not too difficult to guess that the space was designed to cater more to ladies who look for the finer things in life. The Champagne selection includes Perrier-Jouet Blanc de Blancs, Cuvée Belle Époque Brut & Rosé, G.H. Mumm Cuvée R. Lalou (B40,000/bottle), G.H. Mumm Grand Cru Brut Selection (B21,000/bottle), Perrier-JouëtBlason Rosé (B18,000/bottle) – all of which are available exclusively here. Some of the world’s finest caviar – Beluga Imperial (30g, B40,000), Beluga Special Reserve (30g, B70,000) and Ossetra Special Reserve (30g, B44,000) – are available to compliment the expensive bubbly. With limited seats, the privilege of tasting exclusive Champagne belongs to only a few guests per night.

Vertigo and Moon Bar

A relaunched menu mixing old favorites with recent additions is a convincing reason to pay another visit to Vertigo and Moon Bar

Breezy rooftop restaurant Vertigo and Moon Bar on the 61st floor of Banyan Tree Hotel features Art Deco furniture and flickering candles on each table. Knowledgeable waiters make recommendations from a recently revamped menu. Of particular note are pan-seared foie gras with brandy-caramelized apples, cherry reduction and toasted brioche (B580), fried squid legs served with larb spices and sriracha mayonnaise (B450), and jasmine tea-smoked lamb loin with garlic mash and lamb jus (B550). If you’re interested in an after-dinner treat, there’s the signature Caramello (caramel mousse, almond choux crumble, caramel popcorn and caramel ice cream, B280).

Sirocco & Sky Bar

This rooftop bar offers the best bird’s-eye view of Bangkok

Located on the 63rd floor of the State Tower, Sirocco & Sky Bar is a must-visit for both locals and foreigners visiting Bangkok. Its golden spot on Silom Road gives the best city and river views of the city. Kick off your night in alfresco settings with an authentic Mediterranean meal at Sirocco before heading up to the Sky bar for an after-dinner drink. Whiskey fans will find more to love about this venue; the bar stocks up on many heritage bottles that are rarely found in Bangkok.

Attitude

The views say it all at Bangkok’s newest rooftop dining destination

While we’re busy checking out the new happenings downtown, a new hotel has risen next to Krungthep Bridge on the other side of the river. Avani Bangkok Riverside is a new affordable five-star hotel and the flagship property of Avani Hotels, one of the hotel chains owned by the Minor Hotel Group. Set atop the hotel building, right next to the hotel’s swimming pool and courtyard, is what promises to be Bangkok’s new rooftop hotspot: Attitude Restaurant and Bar.

The views are killer. Taking up half of the rooftop space, Attitude offers a panoramic view of the Chao Phraya River, Asiatique and the iconic buildings lining the riverbank. Sunset is an ideal time to come — as the afternoon sunlight fades away, millions of LED lights start to light up the outdoor bar’s floor. You almost think you’re walking on a platform of stars.

The kitchen is run by Phattaraphon “Ohm” Thipphawong, a young chef whose CV is dotted with experiences at luxury resorts in Phuket such as Twin Palms, U Zenmaya, and Banyan Tree. “[The menu] is Asian-inspired tapas with a touch of molecular,” he explains. Chef Ohm pairs high-quality meats from around the world with Asian herbs, spices and vegetables to come up with exciting new flavors. There’s the Smoking Caramel Duck, a duck-breast dish smoked with applewood and then caramelized with sugar and fish sauce (B220); lamb lollipops made of sous-vide lamb and flavored with the Moroccan spice, ras el hanout (B340); and a tender Ahi tuna steak that’s cooked medium-rare and served with Chinese-style bean sprout salad in soy sauce (B750). Attitude is one of the few places in Thailand that imports beef from Europe, including ribeye from Spain and tenderloin from Denmark. “Cattle in European farms are bred in an environment where they have been taken better care of, bringing a better quality of meats,” says Ohm.

You probbaly think it’s located quite far from city center. It is. If you drive, you’ll need to pass traffic junctions, take one too many shortcuts, cross a few bridges and go through a couple of expressway toll stations. An alternative is to travel to the river and take the hotel’s free shuttle boat (that too takes forever). But once there, you’ll know, it’s the view — that makes the journey worthwhile.

Above Eleven

Set atop Fraser Suites Sukhumvit, Above Eleven serves up nifty Peruvian-Japanese nosh, aka Nikkei cuisine, along with refreshing tipples

Above Eleven dares you to go through a maze-like entrance to dine with the Bangkok cityline at your feet. The place offers bite-sized grub and hearty dinners to suit different degrees of hunger. Included in the lineup are Cebiche Above Eleven (seabass, prawns, deep fried calamari, sweet potatoes and red chili leche de tigre, B470), anticucho beef heart served with three Peruvian sauces (B250), Above Roll (six pieces of sushi with beef or salmon, cucumber and tobiko, B540) and Spider Roll (six pieces of sushi with crunchy soft shell crab and tobiko, B380). Don’t miss your chance to watch the sunset while enjoying happy hour offers (50 percent off on cocktails from 18:00 to 20:00). Try the Sunset in the Park (sake, vodka, watermelon liquor, lime and orange juice, B310) or go wild with the cheekily named Absinthe Ever Saw Pink Elephants Flying Through a Park? (B460). Dress smartly (dress code: semi-casual) to avoid disappointment at the door.

The Speakeasy

French cuisine and amazing cocktails in a Prohibition-style setting

While the decor takes you almost a century back, the music, in contrast, at this multi-level speakeasy is modern all the way; DJs play house on the rooftop (25th floor) and pop tunes on the 24th floor. The cuisine tweaks French fare with Asian inflections. Get the best of both worlds with grosses crevettes and foie graspoêlé, vermicellechinoise (large prawn, foie gras and Chinese noodles, B270), an unforgettable dish that’s big enough to share. If you want a dish all to yourself, try the Noix de St Jacques enpapillote de risotto, emulsion au parmesan (poached scallops risotto in parmesan sauce, B300), or melon rôti, filet de cailleenfeuille de choux chinois et jambon de Serrano (quail with Chinese cabbage and parma ham, B260). Dessert is definitely a must; the chef recommends the tarte au citron déstructuré (deconstructed lemon tart, B240). Grab a table by the edge of the terrace to enjoy the best views of Bangkok’s city lights as you sip classic concoctions like Gin & Sin (Broker’s gin, fresh lemon juice, orange juice and grenadine, B330), or Hemingway’s Daiquiri (Appleton white rum, maraschino, grapefruit, B330).

ThreeSixty

You probably think eating at a restaurant at the Millennium Hilton will cost you a small fortune, but rooftop bar ThreeSixty refutes this reputation. Offering casual Western cuisine with panoramic 360-degree views, ThreeSixty is perfect for couples and friends hoping to spend their afternoons in a luxurious yet laid-back setting. The venue is best-known for their rooftop picnics, even offering picnic hampers (B1800 net for two persons) stocked with gourmet delights such as lobster and shrimp cocktail salad and foie gras terrine. The basket also contains a serving of deep-fried prawns (packaged in a Chinese take-out box) and beef sandwiches. If you fancy a cocktail—or two—to liven up your picnic, we recommend the Isan Summer (Guatemala rum, orange, passion fruit, Thai tea syrup and kaffir lime, B450), pink sangria (chopped fresh fruits and rosé wine, B450), Bohemian Bliss (absinthe with apple juice, B450) or the Seduction of a Geisha (cognac, Japanese sake, green tea, fresh ginger and shitake syrup, B450), which comes with sashimi.

Octave

Local DJs in a New York-style rooftop bar

Bangkok’s sweltering heat doesn’t stop a bunch of expats and tourists from enjoying the last rays of sun over happy hour at multi-level rooftop spot, Octave. Located at Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit, Octave offers light, East-meets-West bites and tapas-style dishes for you to nibble on while enjoying the bar’s signature cocktails. What makes this New York-style rooftop even cooler is how it serves moreish finger food in a transparent chest of drawers resembling skyscrapers. We recommend the waruoro platter (fresh oysters, tuna salmon nigiri, California roll and rainbow roll, B1200) and the enothini platter (prawn and bacon sliders, marinated chicken with mango coriander salsa, tuna tartar and sesame wafers, goat cheese with caramelized onions and crab-cake pops, B1200). Meanwhile, local ingredients are used to create cocktails like a Thai-style mojito (Thai rum, lime, mango and basil) and Shining Sun (rum, tamarind, pomelo, lime shrub, mango and pineapple juice). The menu is rotated every four months and promotional menus crop up every month. A local DJ takes over the decks from 8pm until late.

Park Society

Stunning vistas, fine cuisine and an accessible location have made Park Society a must-visit rooftop bar in town

Though new head chef JoostBijster Western has turned the focus on tapas and casual dishes, regulars can still order gourmet favorites like lamb rack with walnut crust, Jerusalem artichoke purée, roasted shallot and berry jus (B1,900), and pan-roasted Tajima wagyu ribeye with black pepper crust, sautéed mushrooms, potato gratin and pepper sauce (B2,500). Save some room for the homemade berry soufflé served with berry sorbet (B300). Seeking even more stunning views? Climb up one floor to exclusive rooftop bar, Hi-So, which hosts Hi-So Ladies’ Night on Wednesdays (19:00 to 21:00), and Hi-So Gentlemen’s Night every Thursday (19:00 to 22:00).

Red Sky

Soar up to Centara Grand at CentralWorld’s rooftop to experience 360-degree city views while enjoying French cuisine by Chef Hugo Coudurier

When you tire from shopping at CentralWorld, take the elevator to the 55th floor and fill up your belly with imported premium meat and seafood. Of particular note are the king crab salad with shaved fennel, baby lettuce and salmon roe (B655) and wagyu beef tenderloin Rossini-style, a delectable foie gras-topped dish that’s served with truffle mushrooms, wild mushrooms and Madeira sauce (B2,155). The seafood on ice—salmon caviar, giant prawns, lobster, oysters, king crab, Carabineros, langoustines, mussels and a variety of dips (B5,555)—is impressive and worthy of big groups. If you’re considering dessert, the Manjari Chocolate Tartelette which comes with a generous dollop of pistachio ice-cream (B395) is an absolute delight.

Red Sky also offers happy hour drinks to complement views of the rosy sunset (16:00 to 18:00). Choose from over 300 labels of wine or opt for signature cocktails like Until the Dawn (Absolut Elyx, Havana rum, Olmega Gold Tequila, lime, rosemary and pineapple juice) or Vanilla Sangria Energy (Absolut Vanilia, white sangria, chopped fruits and an energy drink).

Lights are dimmed after sunset in the alfresco section to effect a breezy, romantic vibe. If you’d rather see what’s on your plate, reserve a table in the airconditioned indoor section or at the bar.

Sala Rattanakosin

After taking your fill of classic Thai food by British chef Tony Wrigley at Sala Rattanakosin’s restaurant, climb up to the hotel’s photogenic rooftop bar to enjoy the breeze and a bevy of colorful cocktails. Popular tipples include the Rooftop Punch (Bacardi, Captain Morgan, triple sec, banana liquor, lime juice and fruit punch, B290), Bangkok sour (Mekhong Thai Whiskey, cointreau, lime juice, pineapple juice and grenadine, B290) and a classic dirty martini (Bombay sapphire with a dash of dry martini, shaken, B290). The rooftop bar also offers Thai and Western light snacks such as muu ping (Thai-style chargrilled pork skewers served with sticky rice and smoked chili-tamarind relish, B199) and tuna tartare baskets (marinated ahi tuna, crispy golden baskets and avocado relish, B199).
