New catamaran to enhance guest experiences and reinforce the Whitsundays as the “heart of the Great Barrier Reef”
Cruise Whitsundays has confirmed a major fleet expansion with the commissioning of a new 36-metre catamaran, set to enter service in early 2027. The $15 million vessel, designed by Incat Crowther and to be built by Austal Australasia, will further strengthen the company’s reputation as the leading operator in the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef region.
“This is another step in our significant investment in Cruise Whitsundays’ fleet and facilities,” said Journey Beyond Chief Operating Officer Sture Myrmell. “The new vessel will allow us to take guests further and deliver unforgettable experiences at our two reef pontoons in one of Australia’s most iconic destinations.”
Austal secured the contract following a competitive tender process. “We are thrilled to be building this remarkable vessel for Journey Beyond,” said Austal CEO Paddy Gregg. “It will redefine adventure on the water and elevate the travel experiences that Cruise Whitsundays is known for.”
Purpose-Built for the Reef
The catamaran will accommodate 390 guests, including ten wheelchair-accessible spaces, and operate at speeds of 25 knots for reliable transfers. The multi-deck design includes an open-air viewing platform, flexible indoor and outdoor seating, a 160-seat main deck with two food service areas, a bar, a spacious galley, and accessible facilities.
“Most importantly, this is a win for tourism,” Myrmell added. “It will enhance opportunities for guests to explore the reef and its natural wonders.”
Boosting the Region’s Global Profile
Tourism Whitsundays Chief Executive Tim Booth said the project reaffirms the destination’s standing on the world stage. “The Whitsundays is proudly known as the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. This new vessel will reinforce our reputation as the ultimate place to experience it, while showcasing Australia’s natural icons to the world.”
Cruise Whitsundays already carries more than 700,000 passengers annually, offering reef tours, overnight stays, Whitehaven Beach excursions, and island transfers connecting Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, and Daydream Island. The new vessel is expected to further elevate these experiences, combining comfort, efficiency, and sustainability in one of the world’s most celebrated marine environments.
