Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport plans to launch India’s first air train system, covering 7.7 km, for efficient connectivity between terminals and facilities
Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to revolutionise travel with India’s first air train system. This cutting-edge project will seamlessly connect Terminals 1, 2, 3, Aerocity, and Cargo City, spanning 7.7 km with four convenient stations. Replacing the existing DTC bus service, the air train will significantly reduce travel time and enhance passenger experience.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has issued a tender for the estimated INR 20 billion project, with bids expected in October and November. The contract will be awarded based on cost, revenue-share models, and viability gap funding, utilising the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer (DBFOT) model.
This innovative system aims to:
• Provide reliable connectivity between terminals
• Enhance passenger convenience
• Improve Airport Service Quality (ASQ) score
• Reduce carbon footprint
As one of India’s busiest airports, handling over 7 crore passengers annually, this air train is crucial for future growth. With passenger numbers expected to double in 6-7 years, the air train will ensure seamless connectivity. Targeted for completion by 2027, this project marks a significant milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure development.
