Dubai’s ambitious tourism sector is poised for another landmark year, aiming to surpass 20 million international visitors in 2024, buoyed by robust growth from its key market, India. In 2023, the city recorded an impressive 17.15 million overnight visitors, marking a significant 19.4% year-on-year increase from 2022, with India contributing 2.46 million to this total.
As Dubai intensifies efforts to enhance its appeal, it has identified three pivotal segments within the Indian market: stopover passengers, summer travelers, and luxury seekers. Leveraging its status as a major transit hub, Dubai is targeting transit passengers from India, recognizing the potential to elevate its status as a preferred stopover destination.
Bader Ali Habib, Regional Head of Proximity Markets at the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, emphasized the strategic importance of transit passengers: “Capturing short-term visits from transit travelers is critical. Many Indians pass through Dubai, presenting an opportunity to boost visitor numbers significantly.”
Dubai is also keen on attracting the Indian diaspora, particularly from the US and UK, positioning the city as an ideal destination for stopovers enriched with shopping, leisure, and entertainment options.
Summer tourism is another focal point, with Dubai launching initiatives like the ‘Kids Go Free’ campaign to appeal to families during the school break months of May to August. This initiative, which includes free stays and activities for children under 12, underscores Dubai’s commitment to family-friendly tourism.
Furthermore, Dubai is enhancing its luxury offerings to attract affluent Indian travelers, highlighting premium experiences in shopping, dining, and lifestyle. The city’s proactive approach includes targeted campaigns and partnerships to cater to this discerning segment.
The first quarter of 2024 has already seen a promising start with a 12% increase in Indian tourist arrivals, totaling over 687,000 visitors. Habib expressed optimism about continued growth, noting Dubai’s proactive stance in adapting to evolving market dynamics.
With India’s growing influence on Dubai’s tourism landscape, the city remains steadfast in its pursuit of innovation and adaptability, aiming to sustain its position as a global tourism hub amidst evolving traveler preferences and market dynamics.
