A total of 7.6 million travellers passed through Heathrow airport in July, the highest monthly figure since summer 2019.

The figure was up 21 per cent on July 2022, and represented the fifth highest monthly passenger numbers recorded at the airport, beaten only by the months of July and August in 2018 and 2019.

Heathrow said that the poor weather in Britain during July resulted in particularly strong numbers for summer sun destinations including Turkey, which reported a record 73,000 passengers last month. Departures to Gibraltar, Portugal and Italy were also close to record levels.

The airport also highlighted New York as being the most popular destination during July, with an average of 31 daily flights to the city. For our recent look at airlines flying between London and the Big Apple.

British Airways recently announced several new and resuming short-haul routes from Heathrow, while Virgin Atlantic is set to restart flights between Heathrow and Dubai this winter.

Heathrow’s outgoing CEO John Holland-Kaye – who is set to be replaced by former Copenhagen airport boss Thomas Woldbye later this year – said:

“It’s great to see so many passengers getting away to grab some summer sun. We’ve got a great range of popular destinations and our teams are delivering excellent service which will ensure your travels get off to the best start.”
