Hong Kong Tourism Board announces grand “New Year New Legend” fireworks, featuring a 12-minute, season-themed display over Victoria Harbour.

As the world anticipates the farewell to 2023, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is bringing to Hong Kong’s grandest-ever “Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations” to welcome 2024 with the biggest and longest New Year countdown firework musical display the city has ever seen.

With the world-famous, panoramic Victoria Harbour as the stage, the 12-minute festive display, themed “New Year New Legend”, will span 1,300 metres, from Central to Causeway Bay, surpassing all previous editions in Hong Kong in both scale and duration. Launched synchronously from five barges in the harbour, the fireworks will take the audience on a captivating journey through the four seasons of winter, spring, summer and autumn, presenting a brilliant, rich audio-visual feast, from silver winter snowflakes to an energetic, colourful summer.

As the clock inches closer to midnight, the façade of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) will be adorned with a large countdown clock. At the stroke of midnight, a brand-new musical arrangement will draw up the curtain for the 12-minute display. As the vibrant fireworks light up Hong Kong’s iconic skyline, the thematic music, blending various genres of music, including electronic, Western classical and Chinese instrumental, will fill the air, perfectly showcasing Hong Kong’s East-meets-West cultural appeal.

To enhance the atmosphere in the build-up to the peak at midnight, there will be pre-show wish-making sessions every 15 minutes from 11 pm onwards. Pyrotechnics will shoot from the rooftops of three prominent harbourfront high-rises on Hong Kong Island, illuminating the sky in four different colours, symbolising love, health, happiness and wealth in the New Year.

The full New Year countdown spectacle will be broadcast live on local TV, HKTB’s Discover Hong Kong website and social media platforms. Highlights of the event at the scenic Harbour will also be shared with viewers worldwide through satellite broadcast, allowing those outside Hong Kong to celebrate the city’s unique joy, festivities and energy together.
