ITB China 2026 officially opened on May 26 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre, bringing together global tourism stakeholders as the travel industry increasingly pivots towards luxury experiences, technology-driven innovation, and specialised tourism segments.

Now in its ninth edition, the annual travel trade exhibition has emerged as one of Asia’s most influential tourism industry platforms, connecting international destinations, tourism boards, hospitality brands, travel technology providers, airlines, and tour operators with the rapidly evolving Chinese travel market.

Organised by Messe Berlin, this year’s event has expanded significantly in both scale and participation, reflecting the continued recovery and transformation of the global tourism sector.

Expanded Event Highlights Growing Importance of Chinese Travel Market

According to organisers, ITB China 2026 has increased its exhibition floor space by 20 percent compared to the previous edition, welcoming more than 900 exhibitors representing 85 countries and regions.

The event is also hosting approximately 1,700 high-level travel buyers from across international markets, underlining China’s continued significance as both a major outbound tourism source market and an increasingly attractive inbound destination.

The exhibition formally opened with a traditional renjishi lion dance ceremony attended by key tourism and government officials, including David Ruetz and Irakli Nadareishvili.

Georgia is serving as the official partner destination for this year’s edition, reflecting the growing interest among destinations in strengthening visibility within the Chinese outbound travel market.

Industry experts note that Chinese outbound tourism continues to play a crucial role in global tourism recovery, with destinations worldwide intensifying efforts to attract high-spending Chinese travellers seeking experiential, premium, and personalised travel offerings.

Luxury, Cruise, Sports and Educational Tourism in Focus

During the opening sessions, David Axiotis, Managing Director of Messe Berlin (China), highlighted four key tourism segments that will define this year’s exhibition and industry discussions.

These include luxury travel, cruise tourism, outdoor and sports tourism, and educational travel — all segments currently experiencing strong growth momentum globally.

Axiotis stated that the event aims to showcase richer premium tourism resources while creating new opportunities across specialised travel markets.

“[We are] presenting richer premium resources and new opportunities across specialised travel markets,” he said.

The emphasis on luxury and experience-led tourism reflects changing consumer behaviour, particularly among affluent and younger travellers who increasingly prioritise authenticity, wellness, exclusivity, and personalised itineraries over traditional mass tourism products.

Cruise tourism has also emerged as a major focus area amid rising interest in experiential and multi-destination travel formats, particularly within Asia’s expanding outbound tourism markets.

Meanwhile, sports tourism and outdoor travel continue gaining traction globally as travellers increasingly seek active, adventure-based, and wellness-oriented experiences.

Educational travel has also become a rapidly evolving segment, driven by growing interest in cultural exchange programmes, language learning, academic tourism, and immersive heritage experiences among younger travellers and families.

Technology Innovation Takes Centre Stage

A major highlight of ITB China 2026 is the expanded Travel Innovation Hub, which underscores the increasing role of technology in reshaping the future of global tourism and travel distribution.

According to organisers, the innovation platform is designed to strengthen collaboration between travel technology developers, tourism businesses, and destination stakeholders through five core modules:

  • Technology showcases
  • Travel technology forums
  • Innovators’ pitching sessions
  • High-level networking meetings
  • Comprehensive travel trend reports

Industry observers note that travel technology is becoming central to the transformation of the tourism ecosystem, with artificial intelligence, digital booking platforms, smart tourism solutions, data analytics, and personalisation tools increasingly influencing traveller behaviour and industry operations.

The event’s focus on innovation also reflects the tourism industry’s ongoing adaptation to evolving consumer expectations around convenience, digital accessibility, sustainability, and customised travel experiences.

China Continues to Shape Global Tourism Trends

As one of the world’s largest tourism source markets, China remains a major driver of international tourism growth and industry innovation.

The expansion of ITB China comes amid rising outbound travel demand from Chinese consumers and growing interest from international tourism stakeholders seeking deeper engagement with the Chinese market.

Hospitality analysts believe events such as ITB China play an increasingly important role in facilitating partnerships, destination marketing initiatives, and cross-border tourism collaboration at a time when the global travel industry is entering a new phase of experience-led and technology-enabled growth.

With luxury tourism, wellness travel, cruise holidays, sustainable tourism, and digital transformation continuing to reshape global travel patterns, ITB China 2026 is expected to serve as a key platform for identifying emerging opportunities and future trends within the international tourism economy.
