Thailand marked a major milestone in expanding air connectivity with the Middle East as Etihad Airways launched its inaugural direct flight from Abu Dhabi to Krabi on 9 October 2025. The new route strengthens Thailand’s position as a premier destination for beach, wellness, cultural, and sustainable tourism while supporting the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) strategy to grow premium and family-friendly travel in the south.
The welcome ceremony at Krabi International Airport featured traditional Thai performances and special souvenirs for arriving passengers, exemplifying the warmth and hospitality of the Amazing Thailand brand. Key dignitaries in attendance included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Minister of Interior Ms. Sasithorn Kittidhrakul, TAT Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Krabi Governor Mr. Ratthasart Chidchoo, and Mr. Danai Ruengsorn, Director-General of the Department of Airports, alongside senior officials and private sector tourism partners.
Flight EY424, operated on an Airbus A321LR with 160 seats, increases monthly seat capacity between Thailand and the Middle East by approximately 7,650 seats—around a 16% rise over existing levels—boosting travel convenience and regional tourism growth.
“This new direct connection between Abu Dhabi and Krabi opens fresh opportunities for sustainable tourism development in southern Thailand,” said TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool. “We are committed to empowering local destinations to offer authentic, high-quality experiences that blend cultural richness with environmental responsibility and community engagement.”
Krabi Governor Ratthasart Chidchoo emphasized the province’s readiness to welcome travellers from the Middle East and beyond. “Krabi is renowned not only for its stunning islands and marine attractions but also for its vibrant cultural and community-based tourism experiences. Visitors can explore authentic local lifestyles and distinctive encounters that make Krabi truly memorable,” he said.
Sustainability remains a cornerstone of Krabi’s appeal. Earlier this year, Lanta Archipelago National Park was named among Thailand’s top ten winners in the 2025 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories, highlighting the province’s commitment to responsible tourism through initiatives like the Krabi Prototype model supported by TAT.
The new Etihad Airways service also reflects TAT’s ongoing collaboration with international carriers to enhance access to southern Thailand and attract high-value travellers. “The route complements our efforts to draw visitors seeking health and wellness, luxury, family-friendly, and halal-conscious experiences. Thailand’s growing reputation as a global Medical and Wellness Hub allows us to offer meaningful travel experiences that capture the essence of Amazing Thailand,” Thapanee added.
To promote the new connection, the TAT Dubai Office is organising a familiarisation trip for key opinion leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), highlighting local gastronomy, cultural heritage, and themed itineraries such as the Hidden Gem Cities and Jurassic World: Rebirth film location route—showcasing southern Thailand’s diverse experiences for Middle Eastern travellers.
Between January and September 2025, Thailand welcomed approximately 618,000 visitors from the Middle East, with arrivals projected to reach 850,000 by year-end. On average, Middle Eastern tourists spend 10 days in Thailand and around 104,000 Baht per trip, underscoring the region’s importance in Thailand’s tourism growth and positioning the kingdom as a world-class, welcoming destination.
