A landmark addition to Australia’s premium adventure tourism landscape has been unveiled with the launch of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Signature Walk, a five-day, fully guided journey spanning 54 kilometres across the ancient red heart of the continent. Developed by Tasmanian Walking Company, the experience connects two of Central Australia’s most iconic geological formations—Uluru and Kata Tjuta—through a newly mapped network of desert trails.

Positioned as the 15th addition to the Great Walks of Australia collection, the itinerary represents the first new long-distance, overnight walking experience launched inside an Australian national park in more than a decade, signalling renewed momentum in the country’s experiential tourism sector.

A Curated Journey Through 500 Million Years of Landscape

Stretching across a 500-million-year-old desert environment, the walk has been designed as a fully curated small-group experience, limited to just 16 guests per departure. Operating seasonally between April and September, the product combines guided exploration with immersive cultural interpretation and high-comfort wilderness accommodation.

Travellers traverse remote desert terrain during the day before retreating to purpose-built safari-style camps and a private lodge at night, offering a rare balance between rugged exploration and elevated comfort.

According to Brett Godfrey, the product represents a significant opportunity for the adventure travel sector, particularly for experienced walkers and repeat visitors to the region.

He noted that early demand has been driven by seasoned travellers seeking new, high-value experiences, and highlighted the exclusivity of the offering as a key differentiator in the global walking tourism market.

Access to Country and Culture

Beyond its geographical scale, the experience is deeply rooted in cultural storytelling and collaboration with Anangu Traditional Owners, the custodians of the land surrounding Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

The walk has been developed in close partnership with these communities to ensure cultural integrity, with routes and interpretation shaped by Indigenous knowledge systems. Select sections of the journey provide access to areas and narratives not typically available to the public, offering a rare perspective on one of the world’s most culturally significant landscapes.

A steering committee representative, Tapaya Edwards, emphasised the emotional and spiritual depth of the experience, noting that visitors will engage directly with Country in a way that highlights its ancient continuity and living cultural significance.

A Shift in High-Value Experiential Travel

The launch comes at a time when global travel patterns are increasingly shifting toward immersive, small-group and time-rich experiences. Industry executives suggest that the new walk aligns with rising demand for domestic and regional travel products that combine authenticity, exclusivity and logistical simplicity.

Tony Quarmby, General Manager of Sales and Marketing, noted that travellers are increasingly prioritising curated experiences that remove operational complexity while maximising cultural and environmental engagement.

He added that the product reflects a broader industry trend toward high-value experiential travel, where access and storytelling are as important as physical activity. The fully managed nature of the journey—including permits, logistics and accommodation—positions it as a seamless offering for both domestic and international travellers.

Strong Early Demand and Limited Capacity

Despite its recent launch, the walk is already attracting strong forward bookings, particularly from repeat visitors to Uluru and experienced hiking enthusiasts. With capacity capped at 16 guests per departure, availability is expected to remain limited throughout the inaugural seasons.

The five-day itinerary includes approximately 38 kilometres of newly established trails, offering access to previously unexplored routes within the region. Pricing starts from AUD 5,395 per person (twin share), reflecting its positioning within the high-end adventure tourism segment.

Walking Through Deep Time

More than a physical journey, the experience is designed as an immersion into geological and cultural time. Travellers move across terrain shaped over hundreds of millions of years, while also engaging with stories that span tens of thousands of years of continuous Indigenous connection.

The experience culminates in nights spent under the expansive desert sky, where the remoteness of the landscape becomes part of the narrative itself.

As one of the most significant new additions to Australia’s walking tourism portfolio in over a decade, the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Signature Walk signals a renewed focus on low-impact, high-value travel experiences that prioritise access, storytelling and cultural depth.
