Overview of the Situation

The Royal Thai Government is closely monitoring an evolving situation along certain parts of the Thai–Cambodian border, specifically in Ubon Ratchathani and Surin provinces. These developments stem from localised security concerns related to a border dispute in a limited area near the overlapping boundary zones.

In response to recent incidents involving unauthorised cross-border activity and security threats, including isolated clashes and the presence of landmines near remote military patrol routes, Thai authorities have taken swift and targeted precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

It is essential to note that these events are geographically restricted to remote areas of the Thai–Cambodian border and do not impact the vast majority of the country, including popular tourist destinations.

Temporary Border Closure:

To safeguard the well-being of residents and travellers, the 2nd Army Region of the Royal Thai Army issued Special Order No. 613/2568 on 23 July 2025, which enacts the temporary closure of specific border checkpoints and tourist areas along the Thai–Cambodian frontier.

Key points of this order include:

  • Suspension of cross-border travel through designated checkpoints in affected areas, including Chong Bok and Chong Ta Muen Thom.
  • Closure of border-area tourist attractions located within security zones under army control.
  • Temporary halt to trade and civilian crossings in these zones until the situation stabilises.
  • These measures are proactive and preventive, designed to avoid disruption to local communities and ensure traveller safety. Authorities continue to assess the situation in real time, and updates will be communicated through official channels.

Travel in Thailand Remains Safe and Normal

The Royal Thai Government would like to reassure all travellers that the overall security situation in Thailand remains safe, stable, and welcoming. The recent developments are confined to a limited area near the Thai–Cambodian border in Ubon Ratchathani and Surin provinces and do not affect the rest of the country. Tourist destinations across Thailand remain operational, with no disruptions to travel, transportation, or public services.

Major tourist cities and regions, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Pattaya, Ayutthaya, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Udon Thani, remain fully open as usual and accessible. Airports, highways, interprovincial trains and buses, ferry services, and domestic flights are functioning normally. Hotels, restaurants, attractions, and cultural sites throughout the country continue to welcome guests without any changes to hours or services.

Visitors can enjoy the wide range of experiences Thailand offers—from temples and heritage sites to beach resorts, vibrant street food scenes, and scenic mountain retreats—with complete peace of mind. Local authorities and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) are collaborating closely with partners nationwide to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for all travellers.
