Delhi reported its first coronavirus fatality on Friday increasing the death toll to two in India. The government has shut all schools, colleges and cinema halls and suspended all IPL matches in the city and until 31 March. From social distancing to rigorous airport checks to exhaustively disinfecting all public transport facilities, here’s how the capital is bracing. The 68-year-old who died was said to have contracted the virus from her son who tested positive and had travelled to Japan, Geneva and Italy earlier. The total number of cases  in the city is currently 7. The most recent confirmed case is a Delhi resident working in a private firm in Noida who has a travel history to France and China.

New Delhi’s safety measures against coronavirus (COVID-19)

  1. All schools, colleges and cinema halls will remain shut in the city until 31 March
  2. At Indira Gandhi International Airport, the airport health organisation is performing mandatory thermal screenings for passengers from affected countries. Additionally, infrared temperature guns have been provided to each airport health organization to deal with a large influx of flyers. Hand sanitisers and posters of dos and don’t have been placed across the airport
  3. Buses coming into Delhi from other states are being disinfected at all inter-state bus terminals
  4. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is deep cleaning all its trains , especially hand railings, doors and other surfaces that come in direct contact with people during their travels. It is also disinfecting elevators, escalators and hand railings.
  5. The Delhi government also launched a drive to disinfect all DTC and cluster buses on a regular basis.
  6. The government announced that it has started displaying advisories and dos and don’ts at bus depots, DTC and cluster buses and on digital screens at stations such as Rajiv Gandhi Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat, Chandni Chowk and New Delhi.
  7. An isolation ward has now been set up at Delhi’s Tihar jail to prevent the spread of the virus.
  8. Hotels, too, are taking precautionary measures since one of the affected people dined at a star hotel in the city. The hotel is conducting daily temperature checks of its employees and carrying out deep-cleaning measures.

Laboratories and testing centres for coronavirus in New Delhi

The two testing centres in Delhi are the All India Institute Medical Sciences and the National Centre for Disease Control. The sample collection lab in the city is Lady Hardinge Medical College. (Check the full list of coronavirus testing centres across India.)

List of coronavirus test centres in India

One does not simply walk into a coronavirus testing centre. There is protocol and there is only a limited set of labs that have been authorised for the job. The Indian Council for Medical has says only patients with a certain travel history or those in contact with infected persons need to be tested. When? Where? How? Here’s the breakdown.

Who needs to be tested for coronavirus?

According to the Department of Health Research, the disease COVID-19 is primarily reported in individuals with a travel history to affected countries or those who are in close contact with infected individuals. In India, there is no community transmission yet. Hence, not everyone needs to be tested.

How to get tested for coronavirus (COVID-19)

As per the government’s health protocol, if you have had direct or close physical contact with a laboratory confirmed case or if you have a history of travel within the last 14 days to high risk COVID-19 infected countries, you will have to be home quarantined for 14 days. Only if you show symptoms during this time will a laboratory test be conducted. If these samples test positive, you will be administered further tests and be hospitalised. If they don’t, you’re fine.

Every state has a small number of sample collection labs. This is where your throat swab + nasal swab will be taken. These will be sent up to testing labs, who will then send it to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for final tests.
