Immigration New Zealand moves more visa categories to its enhanced digital application system
New Zealand is taking another step towards fully digital visa processing, with Immigration New Zealand (INZ) set to stop accepting paper applications for a wide range of selected visitor and transit visas from 1 October 2026.
From that date, applicants for the affected visa categories will need to submit their applications through INZ’s enhanced Immigration Online system. The change is part of a broader transition that has already moved most visitor visa and all transit visa applications onto the digital platform.
INZ says the move is intended to make applications easier to complete and track while improving the efficiency of the processing system.
Which visas are moving online?
The change covers the Transit Visa as well as a broad range of visitor visa categories.
Among the affected applications are the standard Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa and Group Visitor Visa, including Approved Destination Status (ADS). The list also includes Academic Visitor, Adoption Visitor, Adoption Pre-citizenship Visitor, Antarctic Traveller, Arts and Music Festival, Culturally Arranged Marriage and Crew Joining a Ship or Plane visitor visas.
Other categories moving to the online-only process include visas for dismissed workers, escorts of medical patients, German law students, guardians, medical treatment, occupational registration, parents and grandparents, Pitcairn Islanders, private yacht or aircraft travellers, short-term entertainment, sports events, super yachts, tour escorts and visiting media.
INZ’s individual visa pages are also being updated to reflect the October 1 change. For example, its current Visitor Visa page states that applications for that category must be submitted through enhanced Immigration Online from the date.
What happens to applications already submitted on paper?
Travellers who have already lodged a paper application before 1 October 2026 do not need to resubmit it.
INZ has confirmed that paper applications submitted before the deadline will continue to be processed normally. The new requirement applies to applications submitted from October 1 onward.
Paper forms will still be available in exceptional circumstances, but applicants who believe they need to use a paper application will have to contact INZ to discuss their situation.
A more streamlined application process
The enhanced Immigration Online system is designed to reduce some of the administrative work associated with paper applications.
Applicants can upload supporting documents digitally, receive updates on their applications and access guidance within the application process. INZ has also developed features intended to tailor questions according to an applicant’s circumstances, potentially reducing incomplete applications and avoidable processing delays.
The system can also capture passport information using an Identity Document Reader, helping reduce manual data-entry errors.
INZ’s wider digital transition has been gradual. Its own user guidance notes that, during the transition, visa applications have been handled through a combination of the existing online system, enhanced Immigration Online and paper channels, depending on the visa category.
Not every visitor visa is affected
The October change does not mean that every New Zealand visitor visa will immediately become online-only.
INZ says several categories will continue to accept applications through their existing channels for now. These include certain visas for partners and children of military personnel, students, workers and New Zealand citizens, as well as the Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa, Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa and Refugee Claimant Visitor Visa.
The immigration authority says paper applications for these categories could be phased out in the future, but no immediate change has been announced.
Travellers should prepare before October
For travellers planning a New Zealand visit after the change takes effect, the practical implication is straightforward: applications for the affected categories will need to be completed digitally.
INZ advises applicants to ensure that required documents are prepared and uploaded correctly. Its current Visitor Visa guidance also recommends applying early, particularly during periods of high demand, and allows applicants to monitor their application status online after submission.
The move represents another stage in New Zealand’s wider digitalisation of immigration services, replacing an increasingly paper-based process with a single online application journey for more temporary visa categories.
