India’s aviation infrastructure expansion is set to reach another milestone with the opening of Noida International Airport, which is expected to commence commercial passenger operations from June 15, 2026. The much-anticipated airport development is poised to transform air connectivity in the National Capital Region while supporting the country’s rapidly growing passenger traffic demand.
Developed and operated by Flughafen Zürich AG, the new airport represents one of India’s most significant greenfield aviation projects in recent years. The first phase of operations will begin with a single runway and an integrated passenger terminal designed to offer faster processing, reduced walking distances and an enhanced traveller experience.
According to official project updates and industry reports, IndiGo will operate the airport’s inaugural scheduled commercial flight, becoming the launch carrier at the facility. Other domestic carriers, including Akasa Air and Air India Express, are also expected to commence services shortly after the opening phase, further strengthening connectivity from the new aviation hub.
The launch of the airport is expected to significantly ease operational pressure on Indira Gandhi International Airport, currently among the busiest airports in Asia. With Delhi NCR witnessing sustained growth in both domestic and international passenger traffic, the addition of a second major airport is viewed as a strategic step toward strengthening regional aviation infrastructure and supporting future travel demand.
In its initial operational phase, Noida International Airport is projected to handle up to 12 million passengers annually. However, the long-term master plan outlines a much larger expansion strategy, including additional terminals and a second runway, eventually increasing the airport’s capacity to approximately 70 million passengers per year.
The project also aligns with India’s broader push to enhance regional connectivity, attract global investment and improve multimodal transport integration. Strategically located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, the airport is expected to become an important gateway for business travel, tourism, logistics and cargo operations across northern India.
Daniel Bircher, Chief International Officer at Zurich Airport Ltd., described the opening as a landmark development for the company’s growing international airport portfolio. Industry observers note that the project highlights rising global confidence in India’s aviation sector, which continues to witness strong growth driven by increasing middle-class travel demand, low-cost carrier expansion and government-led infrastructure investment.
The airport’s opening is also expected to stimulate economic activity across western Uttar Pradesh and the broader Delhi NCR region through job creation, hospitality development, tourism growth and improved global connectivity.
As airlines prepare to announce routes and schedules closer to launch, the opening of Noida International Airport is anticipated to mark a new chapter in India’s aviation growth story and reinforce the country’s ambitions to become one of the world’s leading air travel markets.
