WalletHub study ranks Atlanta as the top summer getaway, highlighting affordability, attractions, dining experiences and travel convenience across the United States.
A new study by personal finance platform WalletHub has identified the best U.S. summer vacation destinations for 2026, revealing a strong preference for cities that combine affordability, rich visitor experiences and easy accessibility.
According to the report, nearly 72 per cent of Americans are planning a summer vacation this season, with travellers increasingly seeking destinations that offer a balance of value, entertainment, culinary experiences and diverse attractions. WalletHub’s 2026 Best Summer Travel Destinations report evaluated 100 of the largest metropolitan areas across the United States using 41 indicators, including travel expenses, local costs, attractions, dining options and tourism infrastructure.
Atlanta Emerges as America’s Top Summer Destination
Surprising many travellers despite its hot summer climate, Atlanta, Georgia secured the number one position in the rankings, followed by Orlando, Florida and Austin, Texas in second and third place respectively.
The dominance of Southern destinations demonstrates that high temperatures are not deterring travellers from choosing cities known for their vibrant cultural scenes, family-friendly attractions, culinary diversity and strong tourism infrastructure.
Florida and Texas emerged as the strongest-performing states in the rankings, with six metropolitan areas combined appearing in the top 20. Florida’s Orlando and Tampa, along with Texas destinations Austin, San Antonio and Houston, showcased the continued popularity of the southern United States as a summer holiday choice.
Affordable Cities Gain Popularity Among Travellers
The report also reflects growing interest in lesser-known destinations that offer memorable experiences without the high costs associated with traditional tourist hotspots.
Oklahoma City recorded the lowest local costs among all metropolitan areas studied, reinforcing its appeal as a budget-friendly destination. Other cities including Cincinnati, Richmond, Tulsa and Omaha also secured places in the top 20, offering travellers walkable neighbourhoods, independent restaurants, museums, cultural attractions, festivals and outdoor experiences at a more affordable price point.
The findings suggest a shift in traveller preferences towards discovering emerging urban destinations where authentic local experiences can be enjoyed without overcrowding or premium travel costs.
Diverse Destinations Across America
The 2026 rankings feature destinations from nearly every region of the United States, showcasing the country’s broad range of summer travel experiences.
The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area ranked as the highest-performing destination on the East Coast, while San Diego led among West Coast destinations.
