India’s inbound tourism story is at an inflection point.
The country has the destinations, heritage, diversity, experiences and scale to emerge as one of the world’s most compelling tourism markets. What it needs now is a sharper strategy to convert that potential into sustained international demand.
That conversation takes centre stage in Visakhapatnam this September as the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) hosts its 41st Annual Convention, from September 10 to 13, under the theme “India: The World’s Next Tourism Opportunity.”
For an industry navigating changing traveller expectations, connectivity challenges, sustainability imperatives and intense global competition, the timing could not be more relevant.
IATO describes its annual convention as one of the most important gatherings on India’s travel calendar, a forum where tourism stakeholders, government representatives and industry leaders come together to exchange ideas and shape strategies for the year ahead. The 2026 edition is expected to bring together participation from the Ministry of Tourism, state tourism departments, tour operators, hospitality, aviation and other segments of the travel ecosystem.
The opening business session, “India – World’s Next Tourism Opportunity: Strategy and Policy,” will bring state tourism leaders and industry voices together to examine how India can translate its tourism potential into opportunity.
The bigger questions are: How can India become easier to sell? How can emerging destinations be integrated into international itineraries? How can air connectivity, infrastructure and visitor experiences improve? And how can tourism growth benefit local communities while protecting the destinations that attract travellers in the first place?
That cross-sector approach may prove to be one of the most important themes of the convention.
India’s tourism growth cannot be driven by one stakeholder alone. Destination promotion needs to connect with airlines. Hotels need to work with tour operators. State tourism boards need stronger international distribution. Policymakers need to understand the operational realities faced by the trade.
VISAKHAPATNAM: THE DESTINATION ON SHOW
For Andhra Pradesh, hosting IATO 2026 is equally strategic.
Visakhapatnam is often described as the “City of Destiny” and the “Jewel of the East Coast” as it offers a compelling combination of coastline, nature, heritage and access to lesser-known tourism experiences.
Post-convention itineraries include Bojjanakonda, Araku Valley and Borra Caves, Rayagada, and the Kakinada, Rajahmundry,Vijayawada circuit, giving tour operators an opportunity to experience destinations that could potentially find a place in future domestic and international itineraries.
RESPONSIBLE TOURISM TAKES CENTRE STAGE
IATO 2026 also puts responsible tourism firmly on the agenda.
The IATO Run for Responsible Tourism returns as part of the convention, while IATO is scheduled to sign an MoU with the Indian School of Nature for a carbon audit of the 41st convention.
Tourism growth today is increasingly measured not simply by how many people visit a destination, but by how responsibly that growth is managed. For India, with its Himalayan landscapes, wildlife habitats, coastlines, heritage sites and culturally sensitive communities the conversation around sustainability can no longer remain peripheral.
FROM NETWORKING TO NEW BUSINESS
The convention also brings the business of tourism into focus through the IATO Convention Travel Mart, state tourism presentations, B2B networking and industry interactions.
With tourism boards from multiple states participating, the event provides a platform for India’s destinations to compete not just for attention, but for inclusion in the product portfolios of tour operators.
That is particularly important for destinations beyond the traditional Golden Triangle and established circuits.
The success of IATO 2026 will ultimately not be measured by the number of delegates attending the convention. It will be measured by what happens afterwards
