Paper visa stickers to be phased out as Egypt modernises entry procedures for international travellers
Cairo, Egypt: Egypt has launched a new digital visa-on-arrival system, replacing traditional paper visa stickers with QR codes as part of a broader initiative to modernise immigration procedures and enhance the arrival experience for international visitors.
The pilot programme officially commenced on 1 August 2026 at all arrival terminals of Cairo International Airportand will be expanded to other airports across the country in phases, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Under the new system, eligible travellers can obtain a Visa QR Code through the official online portal, a dedicated mobile application or self-service kiosks installed in Cairo International Airport’s arrival halls. The QR code may be generated before departure, during the flight or upon arrival, either by travellers themselves or through authorised travel agencies.
At immigration, passengers will present the QR code—either digitally or in printed form—alongside their passport. Immigration officers will scan the code to complete the visa-on-arrival process. The QR code remains valid for 48 hours from the time of issuance.
The ministry said the total cost of the digital visa is USD 36, comprising the existing USD 30 visa fee and a USD 6 processing fee.
During the pilot phase, the digital QR code system will operate alongside the existing paper visa sticker to ensure a smooth transition. Following the successful completion of the trial, Egypt plans to discontinue paper visa stickers, making the QR code the sole visa-on-arrival option for eligible travellers.
The government will announce implementation timelines for additional airports before the nationwide rollout progresses.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has also urged travel agencies, tour operators and other tourism stakeholders to familiarise travellers with the new digital process to facilitate seamless arrivals.
The move forms part of Egypt’s wider tourism digitalisation strategy aimed at improving border efficiency, reducing processing times and supporting the country’s growing international tourism sector.
