UAE’s first completed passenger rail station showcases how the country’s landmark national railway project is set to transform domestic tourism, regional connectivity and sustainable mobility

Standfirst:
The United Arab Emirates is moving closer to a new chapter in passenger transportation as Etihad Rail prepares for the phased rollout of its long-awaited passenger services in 2026. At the heart of this transformation is Fujairah Passenger Station—the first fully completed station on the network—offering a preview of how rail travel could reshape tourism, business mobility and inter-emirate connectivity across the country.

The UAE’s ambitious national railway project is edging closer to reality, with the completion of the first passenger station in Fujairah marking a significant milestone in the development of the country’s future passenger rail network. Designed to connect major cities and regions across the Emirates, Etihad Rail is expected to redefine domestic travel by offering a faster, more sustainable and seamless alternative to road transportation.

Located in the Madinat Al Hilal area of Fujairah and spanning approximately 51,900 square metres, the station serves as the first completed passenger hub within the nationwide network. Strategically positioned near key attractions and transport links, the station is expected to play an important role in boosting accessibility to one of the UAE’s most scenic emirates.

A New Gateway to Fujairah

The completed station provides a glimpse into the future of rail travel in the UAE. Featuring modern architecture, spacious waiting areas, self-service facilities, passenger lounges and streamlined boarding processes, the station has been designed to deliver a convenient and comfortable travel experience.

According to Etihad Rail officials, the Fujairah station is located approximately 12 minutes from Fujairah International Airport, six minutes from Umbrella Beach Corniche and five minutes from the historic Sakamkam Fort, placing visitors within easy reach of some of the emirate’s most important tourism and leisure attractions.

Industry observers believe the station’s location will strengthen Fujairah’s appeal as a tourism destination while supporting wider economic development through improved accessibility and investment opportunities.

Transforming Domestic Travel Across the UAE

Etihad Rail’s passenger network is expected to span approximately 900 kilometres and ultimately connect multiple cities and regions across the UAE. Passenger services are scheduled to be introduced in phases beginning in 2026, with the first routes linking Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah.

The trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h and accommodate around 400 passengers per journey, significantly reducing travel times between major destinations. Early projections indicate that travel between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah could take approximately 105 minutes, offering a compelling alternative to road travel.

The project forms a key part of the UAE’s broader strategy to enhance sustainable mobility, reduce congestion on highways and support long-term economic diversification.

Enhancing Tourism and Visitor Experiences

For the tourism sector, Etihad Rail represents more than a transportation project. It is expected to unlock new travel patterns by making it easier for residents and international visitors to explore multiple emirates within a single trip.

The route between Dubai and Fujairah, in particular, is anticipated to become one of the network’s most attractive leisure journeys, offering passengers a transition from urban skylines to mountain landscapes and coastal scenery in little over an hour.

The railway is also expected to stimulate tourism growth in destinations beyond the UAE’s traditional gateway cities, creating opportunities for regional attractions, resorts, heritage sites and hospitality businesses.

Modern Passenger Experience

The passenger service has been designed around convenience and comfort. Planned onboard features include Wi-Fi connectivity, power outlets at every seat, overhead luggage storage, accessibility facilities and dedicated seating options across different travel classes. Premium passengers will benefit from enhanced comfort and additional onboard amenities.

Officials have emphasised that the focus is on creating a practical, efficient and user-friendly travel experience rather than a highly complex or futuristic transport system.

Economic and Infrastructure Impact

Beyond tourism, the national rail project is expected to generate substantial economic benefits by improving labour mobility, supporting investment and strengthening links between key commercial centres.

Etihad Rail executives have indicated that the launch of passenger services will contribute to a long-term transformation of the UAE’s transportation landscape while creating opportunities across sectors including tourism, real estate, logistics, retail and hospitality.

The project also reflects the UAE’s continued commitment to investing in world-class infrastructure as part of its long-term national development agenda.

Looking Ahead

With Fujairah Passenger Station now complete and additional stations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi nearing readiness, the UAE is entering the final stages before the launch of its first nationwide passenger railway service.

As Etihad Rail prepares for phased operations in 2026, the project is poised to become one of the most significant transportation developments in the region, offering travellers a new way to experience the UAE while supporting tourism growth, economic connectivity and sustainable mobility for decades to come.
