Virginia Tourism Corporation engages Indian travel trade and media in Mumbai and New Delhi as India emerges as one of the fastest-growing overseas source markets for the U.S. state
Standfirst
As India continues to strengthen its position among the world’s most influential outbound travel markets, the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) has launched an intensive five-day tourism marketing mission across Mumbai and New Delhi to deepen engagement with Indian travel trade partners, enhance destination awareness, and drive future visitor arrivals. The initiative underscores Virginia’s growing commitment to the Indian market, which has become one of the state’s most significant international tourism source regions.
Virginia Strengthens Presence in India’s Expanding Outbound Travel Market
The Virginia Tourism Corporation has embarked on a strategic tourism marketing mission to India from June 1–5, 2026, reaffirming the Commonwealth’s long-term commitment to one of the fastest-growing outbound travel markets globally.
The delegation is led by Heidi Johannesen, Managing Director of Global Markets at Virginia Tourism Corporation, and includes representatives from Visit Fairfax, Luray Caverns, Visit Williamsburg, and VTC. Coordinated by Sartha Global Marketing LLP, Virginia’s in-country tourism representation partner since 2018, the mission spans Mumbai and New Delhi and aims to strengthen business relationships with Indian travel professionals, tour operators, travel advisors, and media stakeholders.
Over the course of the five-day programme, the delegation is scheduled to engage with more than 100 representatives from the Indian travel trade and media through a combination of one-on-one meetings, networking events, destination presentations, and media interactions.
The initiative forms part of Virginia’s broader international tourism strategy to increase visitor arrivals, enhance destination visibility, and encourage stronger tourism and cultural exchanges between India and the United States.
India Emerges as a Strategic Growth Market for Virginia
Virginia’s focus on India reflects the remarkable growth of Indian outbound tourism to the Commonwealth over recent years.
According to tourism data released by Virginia Tourism Corporation, India ranked among the state’s most important overseas visitor markets in 2024, contributing more than 69,000 visitors and generating approximately US$124 million in visitor spending.
While preliminary estimates indicate a modest decline in visitation during 2025, mirroring broader trends affecting Indian travel to the United States, the market remains strategically important. Approximately 65,295 Indian travellers visited Virginia in 2025, contributing an estimated US$112 million to the state’s economy.
The long-term trajectory, however, remains overwhelmingly positive. In 2019, India ranked fifth among Virginia’s international visitor markets behind Canada, the United Kingdom, China, and Germany. By 2025, India had risen to become Virginia’s leading overseas source market, second only to neighbouring Canada.
Industry experts view this rapid growth as evidence of increasing awareness among Indian travellers seeking experiential, cultural, luxury, and multi-destination itineraries in the United States.
Showcasing Virginia’s Diverse Tourism Experiences
The tourism mission highlights Virginia’s extensive and varied tourism portfolio, positioning the destination as an attractive choice for Indian leisure travellers, families, luxury seekers, and experiential tourists.
Located on the U.S. East Coast, Virginia offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, heritage attractions, culinary experiences, and luxury accommodations.
Among its most iconic attractions are:
- Shenandoah National Park
- The Blue Ridge Mountains
- Historic Williamsburg
- Chesapeake Bay
- Virginia Beach and Atlantic coastline
- Renowned wine regions
- Cultural and historical landmarks linked to the founding of the United States
The state’s globally recognised “Virginia is for Lovers” campaign continues to serve as a powerful tourism brand that resonates with travellers seeking meaningful experiences, family connections, and authentic destinations.
Speaking during the India mission, Heidi Johannesen, Managing Director of Global Markets at Virginia Tourism Corporation, emphasised the destination’s appeal to Indian travellers.
“Virginia truly is for lovers—lovers of life and memorable times with friends and family. Our scenic beauty and diverse landscape create the perfect setting for outdoor adventures and luxury experiences, while our culinary offerings and rich cultural heritage ensure there is always something new to discover,” Johannesen said.
She added that the tourism mission comes at a particularly significant time as the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary, providing additional opportunities to showcase Virginia’s central role in American history.
Building Stronger Industry Partnerships
Beyond destination promotion, the mission seeks to foster deeper relationships with the Indian travel trade community.
Tour operators, destination management companies, online travel platforms, and travel advisors play an increasingly influential role in shaping outbound travel decisions, particularly for long-haul destinations such as the United States.
Virginia Tourism Corporation believes face-to-face engagement remains one of the most effective ways to build lasting partnerships and increase destination sales.
“Trade and media missions enhance Virginia’s profile in the global tourism marketplace,” Johannesen noted. “These direct interactions allow us to showcase our extraordinary experiences while building long-term relationships with travel professionals and media representatives who influence travel decisions.”
The programme also includes extensive media outreach aimed at increasing awareness of Virginia’s tourism offerings among Indian consumers and travel planners.
Tourism’s Growing Economic Importance
Tourism continues to play a vital role in Virginia’s economy, supporting employment, infrastructure development, local businesses, and community growth across the state.
By attracting more international visitors, Virginia aims to further diversify its tourism economy while expanding visitor spending across hospitality, transportation, retail, entertainment, and cultural sectors.
For Indian travellers, the state presents an increasingly attractive proposition, offering easy connectivity through major U.S. gateways, diverse experiences suited to multigenerational travel, and a blend of luxury, heritage, nature, and adventure.
As outbound travel demand from India continues to grow, destinations such as Virginia are intensifying efforts to capture a larger share of one of the world’s most dynamic international travel markets.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 India tourism mission highlights Virginia Tourism Corporation’s confidence in the long-term potential of the Indian market. By strengthening trade partnerships, enhancing destination visibility, and promoting Virginia’s unique tourism experiences, the state is positioning itself to attract a larger share of Indian outbound travellers in the years ahead.
With increasing demand for experiential travel, heritage tourism, luxury escapes, and nature-based experiences, Virginia appears well placed to benefit from India’s growing appetite for international exploration and meaningful travel experiences.
