World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in partnership with the Government of Egypt, is set to host its first-ever Leadership Cruise along the historic Suez Canal, bringing together more than 300 global travel and tourism leaders to discuss the future of the industry, sector resilience and long-term growth opportunities.
The high-profile gathering will convene senior executives, policymakers and tourism stakeholders from both the public and private sectors aboard the luxury cruise vessel Crystal Serenity, creating a unique platform for strategic dialogue on the evolving global travel landscape.
Industry leaders attending the event are expected to focus on tourism recovery strategies, infrastructure investment, destination resilience and the future direction of international travel amid a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic environment.
Egypt Positioned as a Global Tourism Growth Story
WTTC said the Leadership Cruise will also highlight Egypt’s tourism transformation and its emergence as one of the region’s fastest-growing travel destinations.
According to the organisation, Egypt’s tourism revenues have increased significantly over recent years, rising from USD 4.9 billion during 2020–21 to more than USD 18 billion in 2025.
The growth reflects the country’s continued investment in tourism infrastructure, cultural attractions, aviation connectivity and visitor experiences.
Egypt is currently pursuing an ambitious tourism expansion strategy that includes plans to double its hotel room inventory from the existing 240,000 rooms, strengthen air connectivity through its network of 27 airports and invest further in high-speed rail infrastructure aimed at improving domestic tourism mobility.
Tourism industry observers note that Egypt has increasingly positioned itself as a diversified travel destination combining heritage tourism, luxury experiences, cruise tourism, wellness travel and cultural exploration.
The country’s tourism sector has also benefited from renewed international interest in historical and archaeological attractions.
Grand Egyptian Museum Strengthens Cultural Tourism Appeal
Among Egypt’s most significant recent tourism developments is the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum near Cairo, one of the world’s largest archaeological museums dedicated to a single civilisation.
The museum houses more than 100,000 artefacts, including approximately 20,000 objects being displayed publicly for the first time.
Egypt is home to more than 200 museums and archaeological sites, alongside seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reinforcing its status as one of the world’s most historically significant tourism destinations.
Industry experts believe continued investment in cultural tourism infrastructure will play a major role in sustaining Egypt’s long-term visitor growth and strengthening its competitiveness within the global tourism market.
Tourism Leaders to Discuss Recovery and Resilience
WTTC stated that the Leadership Cruise will feature dedicated sessions focused on Egypt’s tourism development journey as well as broader discussions involving ministers, CEOs and industry leaders on strategies to expand tourism opportunities across destinations and travel businesses worldwide.
The event is being supported by several industry partners and sponsors, including the Antonio Lefebvre Foundation, Visit Egypt, Crystal Cruises, Coral Travel Group and Abercrombie & Kent.
According to WTTC data, the global travel and tourism sector contributed USD 11.6 trillion to world GDP in 2025, representing 9.8 percent of the global economy while supporting approximately 366 million jobs worldwide — equivalent to one in every nine jobs globally.
Industry leaders say such forums are becoming increasingly important as the sector navigates changing traveller expectations, geopolitical uncertainties, sustainability pressures and evolving business models.
Egypt Highlighted as an Example of Tourism Resilience
Gloria Guevara described Egypt as an example of resilience and strategic tourism development amid global industry challenges.
“Egypt itself is a great example of resilience in the travel and tourism sector,” Guevara said.
“President El-Sisi is a leader who has championed growth in the sector, with Egypt seeing a USD 34.4 billion contribution in 2025, as well as an impressive 19 million visitors entering the country.”
“The Suez Canal could not be a more fitting location for the WTTC Leadership Cruise, as we bring together public and private sector leaders from all over the world to collaborate on the global recovery,” she added.
Guevara also acknowledged the role of Egypt’s tourism and economic development ministries in supporting the country’s tourism expansion and the organisation of the event.
Manfredi Lefebvre said the cruise provides an opportunity for global tourism leaders to engage in constructive discussions while experiencing Egypt’s tourism offerings firsthand.
“It is an honour to host the first ever WTTC Leadership Cruise onboard the beautiful Crystal Serenity,” Lefebvre stated.
“Over 300 leaders from our sector have gathered to experience the best of Egypt alongside positive and constructive discussion about the resilience and recovery taking place in the travel and tourism sector.”
Cruise Tourism and Experiential Travel Continue to Expand
The WTTC initiative also reflects the growing role of experiential and cruise-based networking events within the global tourism industry.
Cruise tourism has increasingly evolved beyond leisure travel into a platform for business collaboration, destination promotion and high-level industry engagement.
For Egypt, the event further strengthens the country’s profile as a strategic tourism and cruise destination linking Africa, the Middle East and Europe through one of the world’s most historically and commercially important waterways.
Industry observers believe the Leadership Cruise could pave the way for future tourism-focused events and partnerships aimed at supporting global travel recovery and long-term sector resilience.
