Virginia is strengthening its focus on India as the country emerges as the US state’s largest overseas tourism market, with history, luxury, shopping, nature and bleisure travel driving growing interest among Indian visitors.

Virginia is deepening its engagement with India as the country continues to demonstrate resilience as one of the destination’s most important international visitor markets.

Preliminary figures indicate that Virginia welcomed just over 65,000 Indian visitors in 2025, generating approximately US$112 million in visitor spending. While arrivals were slightly lower than the more than 69,000 Indian visitors recorded in 2024, India has continued to strengthen its position in Virginia’s international tourism mix.

From being the state’s fifth-largest international source market in 2019, India moved up the rankings and is now Virginia’s second-largest international market overall, behind Canada, and its largest overseas market.

For Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC), the objective is now to convert that growing interest into longer stays, higher visitor spending and broader itineraries that encourage Indian travellers to discover more of the state beyond the attractions traditionally included in East Coast tours.

The Authentic American Experience

Virginia’s strongest selling point for the Indian market is its ability to offer what tourism officials describe as an authentic American experience.

Heidi Johannesen, Managing Director, Global Markets, Virginia Tourism Corporation, has positioned the state around its combination of history, nature, culture and contemporary experiences.

Virginia’s historical significance is particularly distinctive. The state is closely connected to the origins of the United States and is home to eight US presidents. Its Historic Triangle — Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown — provides an opportunity to explore pivotal chapters of American history.

But the destination’s appeal extends well beyond heritage tourism.

Indian travellers can combine national parks and mountain landscapes with the Atlantic coastline, Chesapeake Bay, vineyards, shopping districts and urban experiences, often without having to travel long distances between contrasting environments.

That diversity allows visitors to experience several dimensions of the United States within a single trip.

From Mountains to Coast

Virginia’s geographical diversity is one of its key advantages for Indian travellers.

Visitors can explore Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains before continuing towards the Atlantic Ocean or Chesapeake Bay. Northern Virginia provides access to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, while destinations such as Loudoun County offer vineyards and countryside within easy reach of the capital.

The combination is particularly well suited to fly-drive holidays, allowing travellers to move between cities, historic communities, mountains, coastlines and rural landscapes.

For Indian visitors who increasingly want to move beyond conventional sightseeing, Virginia offers the opportunity to build a more immersive itinerary around different experiences.

Indian travellers typically spend between 10 and 14 days in Virginia, according to Johannesen, giving the destination significant scope to encourage visitors to explore more of the state.

India Market Shows Resilience

The recent performance of the Indian market has remained encouraging despite geopolitical uncertainty, visa-related challenges and wider changes affecting international travel.

Virginia recorded more than 69,000 Indian visitors in 2024, contributing approximately US$124 million in spending. Preliminary 2025 figures show arrivals of just over 65,000 and spending of around US$112 million.

The modest decline has been viewed in the context of wider challenges facing international tourism to the United States rather than as a fundamental weakening of demand for Virginia.

A slowdown in student travel has also affected the market, according to Johannesen, but tourism officials continue to see strong potential among leisure travellers and other segments.

For Virginia, the fact that India has retained its position as the state’s leading overseas market despite these headwinds reinforces the importance of continued engagement with Indian travel trade and consumers.

Solo Travellers Lead the Market

The Indian visitor profile is also evolving.

Solo travellers account for approximately 42% of Indian visitation to Virginia, according to figures shared by Johannesen. Friends and family groups represent around 38%, while couples account for approximately 34%.

The strong performance of solo travel reflects a broader appetite among Indian travellers for new and less familiar destinations and experiences.

Virginia is also well placed to benefit from the growth of bleisure travel. Travellers visiting major US cities for business can extend their trips to explore the state’s historic towns, national parks, coastline, vineyards and cultural attractions.

Rather than simply adding Virginia as a brief stopover, the destination is seeking to encourage travellers to make the state a more substantial component of their US itinerary.

Ahmedabad Emerges as a Promising Market

While Delhi and Mumbai remain the principal Indian source markets, Virginia is also seeing increasing interest from Ahmedabad.

The growing importance of tier-II cities is encouraging VTC and its India market partners to broaden destination education beyond the traditional metropolitan centres.

Trade engagement remains a central part of that strategy, with travel professionals being introduced to Virginia’s wider product portfolio and encouraged to incorporate the state into longer US itineraries.

The destination sees considerable potential in expanding awareness among Indian travellers who may know Virginia primarily for individual attractions but remain unfamiliar with the breadth of experiences available across the state.

History at the Heart of the Destination

Virginia’s historic credentials are especially relevant during the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026.

The state’s connection to the founding of the United States gives it a distinctive role in anniversary-related travel, while attractions such as Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown provide visitors with opportunities to engage with the country’s early history.

The Historic Triangle has already benefited from increased attention surrounding the anniversary celebrations.

For Indian travellers interested in history and culture, the region provides a deeper perspective on the formation of the United States, complementing visits to major cities and landmarks elsewhere on the East Coast.

Luxury Experiences with a Sense of Place

Luxury is another area where Virginia is seeking to differentiate itself.

Rather than focusing solely on conventional five-star properties, the destination is promoting accommodation and experiences that reflect their surroundings.

Travellers can stay along the Atlantic coast, retreat to mountain properties in Southwest Virginia or explore the rolling countryside of Northern Virginia.

Experiences can range from oyster tastings and coastal activities to outdoor adventures and cultural encounters linked to Virginia’s musical heritage.

The Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Southwest Virginia is one example of the state’s emphasis on experiences rooted in local culture.

This approach allows luxury travellers to combine premium accommodation with authentic experiences and a strong sense of place.

Shopping Remains a Major Attraction

Shopping also remains an important component of the Indian visitor proposition.

Northern Virginia, particularly Fairfax County and the Tysons area, offers extensive retail opportunities ranging from luxury brands to major shopping centres.

Leesburg Premium Outlets, located close to Washington Dulles International Airport, adds an outlet-shopping option that can easily be incorporated into an East Coast itinerary.

For Indian travellers combining sightseeing, business and leisure, the proximity of shopping, urban attractions and Virginia’s wider tourism offerings makes Northern Virginia particularly attractive.

Nature and the Great Outdoors

Virginia’s natural landscapes are becoming increasingly relevant as Indian travellers seek outdoor and experiential holidays.

Shenandoah National Park offers mountain scenery, hiking and scenic drives, while the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay provide a contrasting coastal environment.

The ability to combine mountains, coastline, national parks and major urban centres within a relatively manageable driving itinerary is one of Virginia’s strongest advantages.

The destination is therefore positioning itself as a compelling fly-drive option for travellers who want to experience several sides of the United States without remaining in a single metropolitan area.

Expanding Awareness Across India

Despite the growth of the Indian market, Virginia recognises that awareness of the destination still needs to expand.

Many Indian visitors traditionally encounter Virginia as part of a wider Washington, D.C., itinerary, with attractions such as Luray Caverns often featuring as day trips. Tourism officials are seeking to encourage visitors to stay longer and explore the state’s wider portfolio.

VTC has therefore been increasing its engagement with Indian travel advisors, tour operators and media through sales missions, destination presentations, networking events and marketing activity.

Its partnership with Sartha Global Marketing has also played an important role in developing the Indian market. The collaboration has been in place since 2018, with Virginia crediting the partnership for helping sustain growth in visitation.

While Mumbai and Delhi remain key priorities for trade engagement, the focus is increasingly extending to emerging markets such as Ahmedabad and other tier-II cities.

A Destination Built for Longer Stays

Virginia’s challenge — and opportunity — is to shift perceptions from a destination visited briefly during an East Coast tour to one capable of supporting a substantial holiday in its own right.

Its combination of American history, luxury, shopping, outdoor adventure, culinary experiences, coastal landscapes, mountains and wine country provides the ingredients for longer and more varied itineraries.

For Indian travellers increasingly seeking something beyond the familiar US tourism circuit, that diversity could prove decisive.

As Virginia continues to build awareness across India, its proposition is increasingly centred on a simple idea: giving travellers the opportunity to experience many different sides of America in one destination.
