Tourism Australia has announced the appointment of Kathryn O’Brien as Executive General Manager – Global Markets, effective August 10, 2026, reinforcing the national tourism body’s leadership team at a time of intensifying global competition for international visitors.
Bringing more than two decades of experience across the tourism, aviation, hospitality, and commercial travel sectors, O’Brien will oversee Tourism Australia’s international operations spanning 16 global markets. Her responsibilities will include managing the organisation’s worldwide network of international offices, strengthening airline partnerships, and driving engagement across distribution channels to support inbound tourism growth to Australia.
The appointment comes as Australia continues to focus on rebuilding high-value international visitor arrivals while strengthening its positioning in the increasingly competitive global destination marketing landscape.
Leadership Appointment Supports Global Tourism Strategy
According to Tourism Australia, O’Brien’s appointment aligns with the organisation’s broader strategy to attract high-yield international travellers and deepen trade and airline partnerships across priority markets.
Robin Mack, Managing Director of Tourism Australia, highlighted O’Brien’s extensive commercial and leadership expertise across international-facing business functions.
“Kath brings to Tourism Australia significant skill and experience having worked across a range of international facing roles in sales, distribution, product and marketing strategy to deliver both revenue growth and strong stakeholder relationships,” Mack said.
He added that her combination of commercial acumen and leadership capabilities would support Tourism Australia’s efforts to drive international visitor growth in a highly competitive environment for destination marketing.
“With a strong combination of business acumen and excellent people leadership skills we are excited about what O’Brien can bring to the role and our organisation, to attract high yielding visitors in a time of intense competitiveness in destination marketing,” he stated.
Industry analysts note that global tourism boards are increasingly prioritising experienced commercial leaders capable of integrating aviation partnerships, trade engagement, and destination marketing strategies to maximise international visitor spend and improve connectivity.
Extensive Aviation and Tourism Experience
O’Brien joins Tourism Australia from Air New Zealand, where she currently serves as General Manager Australia. In that role, she has been responsible for overseeing the airline’s commercial activities across the Australian market, including sales, distribution, strategic partnerships, marketing initiatives, and operational coordination.
Her experience in airline distribution and commercial partnerships is expected to play an important role in strengthening Tourism Australia’s collaboration with global aviation partners, particularly as airlines continue expanding international capacity and rebuilding long-haul travel demand across the Asia-Pacific region.
Commenting on her appointment, O’Brien expressed enthusiasm about joining the national tourism organisation and contributing to the promotion of Australia as a leading global destination.
“As someone who has spent a lifetime working in the industry, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join Tourism Australia and represent Australian tourism and work with our teams and partners around the world,” she said.
Prior to her tenure at Air New Zealand, O’Brien held senior leadership positions with Experience Co, where she served as Global Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing strategic commercial and tourism growth initiatives.
She also spent 17 years with Hamilton Island Enterprises, holding multiple leadership positions including Global General Manager Sales. During her tenure, she contributed to expanding the visibility of one of Australia’s best-known island tourism destinations across international markets.
Strengthening Australia’s Position in International Tourism
The appointment comes during a period of strong recovery and transformation for Australia’s tourism sector, with tourism authorities increasingly targeting premium leisure travellers, business events, and experiential tourism markets to boost visitor expenditure and economic contribution.
Tourism Australia continues to focus on strengthening international connectivity, airline cooperation, and global trade relationships as part of its strategy to increase inbound visitation from key markets across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
Industry experts believe O’Brien’s combined expertise across aviation, tourism distribution, destination marketing, and commercial partnerships positions her well to support Tourism Australia’s long-term global growth objectives.
Her appointment also reflects the increasing convergence between tourism marketing and aviation strategy, with destination competitiveness increasingly dependent on integrated airline partnerships, route development, and international market accessibility.
As international tourism demand continues to evolve, Tourism Australia is expected to further focus on high-value travellers seeking premium experiences, nature-based tourism, luxury hospitality, indigenous cultural experiences, and sustainable travel offerings across the country.
